DESCRIPTION:In the U.S.\, people of color and low-income individuals dispr
 oportionately live in areas with potential for higher heat exposure. Meas
 uring heat exposure in urban areas is important for protecting and improv
 ing human health and creating equitable outcomes. Accurate and timely mea
 surements are key for both micro-level policy decisions (e.g.\, where to 
 undertake heat mitigation investments) and macro-level policy analysis (e
 .g.\, reducing disparities in exposure by race and income). Unfortunately
 \, comprehensive and scale-relevant measurements of individual heat stres
 s have proven elusive within cities. To begin to understand historical cl
 imate injustices\, where marginalized communities bear a disproportionate
  exposure and vulnerability to climate change impacts\, a key challenge i
 s to characterize vulnerability and risk of health disparities arising fr
 om climate impacts (including heat stress) at the community scale. Develo
 ping higher resolution\, more relevant metrics would provide multiple ben
 efits to understanding health impacts\, the extent of heat-related enviro
 nmental and climate disparities\, and the impact of heat mitigation measu
 res. In this talk\, I'll discuss our work integrating multiple modelling 
 approaches and data sources to develop higher resolution human-centric me
 asures of heat stress and how this data can inform heat mitigation and ad
 aptation responses.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nA crucial yet unavailable component in high-perfo
 rmance photonic integrated circuits (ICs) and other chip-scale photonic s
 ystems is an on-chip light source that is efficient\, economical\, IC-com
 patible\, and electronically addressable. In this talk\, I will cover sev
 eral types of on-chip sources\, including III-V nanoLEDs and topologicall
 y protected microlasers\, perovskite microlasers and luminescent hyperbol
 ic metamaterials\, and III-N spintronic THz emitters. Lastly\, I will int
 roduce our current efforts in creating chip-scale magneto-optical traps w
 ith optical metasurfaces for applications such as quantum sensing and sin
 gle-atom manipulation.

 greenhouse gas emissions - these emissions are associated with operating

 the University of Pennsylvania. \n\nABSTRACT:  Our living environment pla
 ys a critical role in the quality of our life and well-being. To combat g
 reenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change\, it requires new soluti
 ons that are low cost\, energy efficient and highly scalable. I will disc
 uss the design and manufacturing of scalable\, geometric materials for ef
 ficient decarbonization. I will showcase our recent work on robotic 3D pr
 inting of lightweight and high strength\, carbon absorbing and storage co
 ncrete and our effort towards formation of biocement using living materia
 ls. I will also present moisture wicking\, desiccant-coated kirigami fins
  for energy efficient heat exchange. \n\nBIO: SHU YANG is a Joseph Bordog
 na Professor of Engineering and Applied Science\, Chair of the Department
  of Materials Science & Engineering\, and Professor of Chemical & Biomole
 cular Engineering at University of Pennsylvania (Penn). Her group is inte
 rested in synthesis\, fabrication\, and assembly of soft and hybrid mater
 ials\; dynamic tuning of their sizes\, shapes and assembled structures\, 
 and use of geometry to create highly flexible\, super-conformable\, shape
  changing and energy efficient materials. Yang received her B.S. degree f
 rom Fudan University\, and Ph. D. degree from Cornell University. She wor
 ked at Bell Laboratories\, Lucent Technologies as a Member of Technical S
 taff before joining Penn. She was recognized by ACS Langmuir lectureship\
 , Inventor of the Year at Penn\, George H. Heilmeier Faculty Award for Ex
 cellence in Research from Penn Engineering. She is a Fellow of American A

DESCRIPTION:Portland cement concrete\, the backbone of civil infrastructur
 e\, has a big problem. The portland cement component of concrete is a sig
 nificant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the high 
 temperature manufacturing process that decomposes limestone (CaCO3) into 
 CaO and CO2 and the fossil fuels burned to achieve the high processing te
 mperatures. One of the "easiest" methods to reduce emissions from cement 
 manufacturing is to use less cement. However\, this is like dieting\, eas
 ier in concept than in implementation. A reduction method that has been s
 uccessful for decades and is favored because it improves concrete long-te
 rm performance and durability is to substitute a portion of cement in con
 crete with low carbon supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). From a
 n environmental perspective\, the optimum solution is to replace as much 
 cement in concrete with SCMs as possible. This results in an interesting 
 engineering (and economic) optimization problem where the best materials 
 from a chemical reactivity perspective are not necessarily the ones that 
 can be (or should be) used in the highest quantity. In this seminar\, we'
 ll talk about the complexity of the current SCM landscape and how to meas
 ure\, model\, and tailor their reactivity to optimize their use in concre
 te.

 ed\, preventable errors\, particularly those made intra-operatively\, can
  lead to morbidity and mortality for the patient\, poor training outcomes
  for residents\, and high costs for the hospital. This talk will describe
  some novel hardware\, haptic systems\, and algorithms that could potenti
 ally be used to enhance surgical training\, as well as improve intra-oper
 ative manipulation of tissue. Data-driven methods to predict\, in real-ti
 me\, surgical skill\, surgical style\, and bimanual coordination\, will b
 e presented along with new systems that could be used to assist with surg
 ical intervention or training in a variety of domains.\nAnn Majewicz Fey 
 completed B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineeri
 ng at the University of St. Thomas\, the M.S.E. degree in Mechanical Engi
 neering at Johns Hopkins University\, and the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical 
 Engineering at Stanford University. Dr. Majewicz Fey joined the Departmen
 t of Mechanical Engineering at UT Austin as an Associate Professor in Aug
 ust 2020\, where she directs the Human-Enabled Robotic Technology Laborat
 ory. She holds at courtesy appointment in the Department of Surgery at UT
  Southwestern Medical Center and at the Dell Medical School. Her research
  interests focus on the interface between humans and robotic systems\, wi

DESCRIPTION:Characterizing the impact of human actions on terrestrial wate
 r fluxes and storages at multi-basin\, continental\, and global scales ha
 s long been on the agenda of scientists engaged in climate science\, hydr
 ology\, and water resources systems analysis. This need has resulted in a
  variety of modeling efforts focused on the representation of water infra
 structure operations. Yet\, the inclusion of human-water interactions in 
 macro-scale hydrological models is still rather crude\, fragmented across
  models\, and often implemented at coarse resolutions that cannot accurat
 ely capture local water management decisions. In this talk\, we first foc
 us on the state-of-the-art\, and argue that the increasing interest in hy
 per-resolution models (~0.1-1 km) and the availability of new remotely-se
 nsed observations can help change the status quo. This would require addr
 essing three key challenges\, namely creating datasets that describe huma
 n actions with an unprecedented level of detail\, improving the accuracy 
 with which anthropogenic impacts on water quality and quantity are repres
 ented in hydrological models\, and ensuring that models remain reliable a
 nd computationally efficient. We then turn of our attention to a specific
  case study\, that is\, the representation of reservoir operations in the
  Mekong River basin-a hotspot of hydropower development. For this basin\,
  we present a new dataset of remotely-sensed reservoir storage and then i
 llustrate how such information can be leveraged to improve the reliabilit
 y of a macro-scale hydrological model.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Our research is focused on understanding and creatin
 g molecular devices and machines that can perform specific tasks as direc
 ted by users. We draw inspiration from natural macromolecular assemblies 
 such as viruses and molecular motors and seek to implement similar princi
 ples in synthetic molecular machinery. We use both DNA origami and de-nov
 o protein design in our research. Our efforts have lead to several intere
 sting accomplishments:\n(1) By studying viruses\, we have successfully pr
 ogrammed DNA blocks to self-assemble into icosahedral shells\, which have
  potential applications as programmable antiviral drugs and vaccine carri
 ers. (Wagenbauer et al\, Nature 2017\; Sigl et al\, Nature Materials 2021
 )\n(2) We have developed DNA origami structures capable of carrying genet
 ic instructions that can be read by mammalian cells. This opens up possib
 ilities for a wide range of applications\, including gene therapy and tar
 geted drug delivery. (Kretzmann et al\, Nature Comms 2023\, Liedl et al\,
  JACS 2023)\n(3) We have constructed nanoscale assemblies with controllab
 le movements\, such as autonomous\, power-generating rotary DNA motors an
 d turbines driven by ion flux across membranes. These machines offer pote
 ntial for executing energy-consuming tasks in synthetic cells. (Pumm et a
 l\, Nature 2022\, Shi et al\, Nature Nanotech 2023)\n(4) We have built up
  and validated a novel computational protein design pipeline that enables
  building arbitrary shapes using protein backbones\, which we intend to p
 air up with DNA scaffolds to create multifunctional objects\, such as adv
 anced therapeutic vehicles. (Frank et al\, submitted)

DESCRIPTION:Achieving carbon circularity and net zero emissions requires a
  comprehensive understanding of emissions and re-valorization of waste ca
 rbon\, while keeping fossil carbon underground. Environmental engineers a
 re uniquely positioned to lead sustainable carbon management as the "circ
 ular carbon engineers". For example\, modern wastewater treatment is evol
 ving from "removal-centered" to a "recovery-oriented" approach\, and the 
 increasing availability of low-cost renewable electricity presents new op
 portunities to convert "electrons to molecules". This presentation will h
 ighlight recent efforts to address knowledge gaps in the complex GHG emis
 sion profiles of the wastewater sector\, utilizing both field studies and
  data science methods. It will also discuss technologies for electrifying
  treatment processes\, co-valorizing wastewater and CO2\, performing elec
 trolysis of impaired water\, and producing commodity chemicals using elec
 troactive membranes.

 chanical Engineering at Boston University\, for a talk on "Engineering wi
 th Instability: From Battling Beams and Kirigami Computing." \n\nABSTRACT
 : Engineers design structures to predictably resolve forces and moments t
 hrough a primary load path in which deformations are small and linear. Th
 ere is an enormous opportunity to design structures that rely on nonlinea
 rities and instabilities to perform advanced functions and propagate forc
 es in nontrivial ways. This talk will demonstrate how the complex mechani
 cs of coupled nonlinear structures can create novel actuators\, artificia
 l muscles\, soft robotic grippers\, and perform rudimentary mechanical co
 mputation.\n\nBIO: Douglas Holmes is an Assoc. Professor in the Dept. of 
 Mechanical Engineering at Boston University. He received degrees in Chemi
 stry from the University of New Hampshire (B.S. 2004)\, Polymer Science &
  Engineering from the U. Mass - Amherst (M.S. 2005\, Ph.D. 2009)\, and wa
 s a postdoctoral researcher in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Prin
 ceton. Prior to joining Boston University\, he was an Assistant Professor
  of Engineering Science & Mechanics at Virginia Tech. His research group 
 specializes in the mechanics of slender structures\, with a focus on unde
 rstanding and controlling how objects change shape. His work has been rec
 ognized by the NSF CAREER Award\, the ASEE Ferdinand P. Beer and E. Russe
 ll Johnston Jr. Outstanding New Mechanics Educator Award\, and the Theo d
 e Winter Distinguished Faculty Fellowship.

DESCRIPTION:Molecular separations technologies separate and/or isolate ind
 ividual species from mixtures or solutions. These technologies are used i
 n a wide range of applications such as in the environmental\, pharmaceuti
 cal\, biotechnology\, energy\, food\, and beverage industries. Despite su
 ch diverse applications\, all molecular separations technologies use the 
 common principle of exploiting differences in mass transport due to diffe
 rences in molecular physical and chemical properties\, including size\, c
 harge\, affinity\, and mobility\, among others. In this seminar\, we prov
 ide a brief background on key mass transport concepts and molecular prope
 rties relevant to separations technologies studied in the Coronell Labora
 tory. We then describe how\, through the study of these properties\, we h
 ave helped advance the understanding and/or performance of separations ma
 terials and technologies in diverse applications. We focus on membranes f
 or water desalination and more briefly cover contributions to energy stor
 age\, valuable resource recovery\, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance
 s (PFAS) removal from water.

 cience Fall 2024 Seminar Series welcomes Wei Gao\, assistant professor of
  Medical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology\, for a ta
 lk on "Skin-Interfaced Wearable Biosensors"\n\nABSTRACT: The rising resea
 rch interest in personalized medicine promises to revolutionize tradition
 al medical practices. This presents a tremendous opportunity for developi
 ng wearable devices toward predictive analytics and treatment. In this ta
 lk\, I will introduce our efforts in developing wearable biosensors for n
 on-invasive molecular analysis. Such wearables can autonomously access bo
 dy fluids (e.g.\, human sweat) across the activities and continuously mea
 sure a broad spectrum of analytes including metabolites\, nutrients\, hor
 mones\, proteins\, and drugs. To manufacture these high-performance nanom
 aterial-based wearable biosensors at a large scale and minimal cost\, we 
 employ techniques such as laser engraving\, inkjet printing\, and 3D prin
 ting. The clinical utility of our wearable systems is assessed through a 
 series of human trials\, focusing on precision nutrition\, stress respons
 e and mental health assessment\, chronic disease management\, fertility m
 anagement\, and drug personalization. I will also delve into our ongoing 
 research into energy harvesting from both the human body and the surround
 ing environment\, with the ultimate aim of achieving battery-free\, wirel
 ess wearable biosensing. The integration of these wearable technologies h
 as the potential to unlock a wide spectrum of applications\, ranging from
  personalized monitoring and diagnostics to innovative therapeutic soluti
 ons.\n\nBIO: Wei Gao is an Assistant Professor of Medical Engineering\, R
 onald and JoAnne Willens Scholar\, and Heritage Medical Research Institut
 e Investigator at the California Institute of Technology. He earned his P
 h.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California\, San Dieg
 o in 2014\, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of El
 ectrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of Californi
 a\, Berkeley from 2014 to 2017. He is serving as an Associate Editor for 
 Science Advances\, npj Flexible Electronics\, Biosensors and Bioelectroni
 cs\, and Sensors & Diagnostics.

DESCRIPTION:Designer Nucleic Acid Architectures for Programmable Molecular
  Systems.\n\nMy lab uses nature's design rules as inspiration to advance 
 biomedical\, energy-related\, and other technological innovations through
  the use of self-assembling molecules and materials. We aim to create int
 elligent materials with better component controls at the atomic and molec
 ular levels. Speciically\, we are interested in designing bio-inspired mo
 lecular building blocks such as DNA\, RNA and proteins and programming th
 eir higher order assembly into systems that will perform complex function
 s. Our ultimate goals are 1) to engineer an information guided self-assem
 bling molecular system for the finest possible interactions of molecules 
 in a three-dimensional space\; and 2) to create man-made molecular machin
 es/molecular robotics through molecular design\, molecular programming\, 
 directed molecular evolution and molecular systems engineering.  In this 
 talk I will discuss some of our work along this line and present some of 
 the challenges and opportunities that exist in DNA and RNA based molecula
 r design to engineer programmable materials and programmable medicine.

DESCRIPTION:Low-income and dispersed communities are disproportionally bur
 dened by water pollution due to factors such as residential proximity to 
 point sources of contamination and inadequate access to clean water and s
 anitation infrastructure. Early detection of water pollutants is critical
  to preventing community exposures and the subsequent onset of environmen
 tally linked diseases. However\, pollution assessment in economically cha
 llenged communities is hampered by the difficulty and high cost associate
 d with laboratory testing. In this seminar\, I will provide some examples
  of field-deployable sensors developed by our group for detecting various
  water pollutants of significance to rural communities in Colombia (South
  America)\, such as agricultural pesticide residues and fecal coliforms. 
 I will further discuss the pollution and health risk assessments associat
 ed with water consumption in the studied communities and draw some lesson
 s for future work in this domain.

 e\, "Can Needle-Sized Robot Tentacles Help Surgeons Save Lives?"\n\nABSTR
 ACT: Thin\, flexible robots able to bend and elongate can help surgeons r
 each deeper and more accurately into the human body than ever before\, th
 rough increasingly smaller incisions. This talk will cover recent breakth
 roughs in design\, control\, and sensing that are rapidly pushing the bou
 ndaries of surgical robotics to smaller scales\, greater accuracy\, and m
 ore effective interaction with surgeons. Mechanics-based models of elasti
 c robots provide the basis for these advancements\, which in turn provide
  the raw materials necessary for building effective surgical robotic syst
 ems. These systems can offer autonomous\, teleoperated\, or hand-held sur
 geon-robot interactions. The talk will cover both recent advancements in 
 concentric tube robots and other new ideas in surgical robotics. An impor
 tant theme of the talk will be the fascinating process of partnering with
  surgeons to create robots suitable for real-world operating room environ
 ments that have the potential to be powerful weapons in the fight against
  lung disease\, brain tumors\, hemorrhagic stroke\, epilepsy\, deafness\,
  and urologic disorders.  \n\nBIO: Robert J. Webster III is the Richard A
 . Schroeder Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Vanderbilt University.
  He received his B.S. in electrical engineering from Clemson University i
 n 2002\, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Johns 
 Hopkins University in 2004 and 2007. In 2008\, he joined the mechanical e
 ngineering faculty of Vanderbilt University\, where he currently directs 
 the Medical Engineering and Discovery Laboratory. He founded and serves o
 n the steering committee for the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Eng
 ineering\, which brings together physicians and engineers to solve challe
 nging clinical problems. He is the founder and President of Virtuoso Surg
 ical\, Inc. and EndoTheia\, Inc. which are commercializing technologies i
 nvented in his laboratory\, and have raised over $30M in private capital 
 and grant funding\, and received FDA Breakthrough Device designation. Pro

DESCRIPTION:Natural hazards magnify drinking water contamination dispariti
 es\, as inequities in hazard risks\, infrastructure recovery\, and social
  support systems can render well-reliant populations more vulnerable and 
 less resilient. The impact of natural disasters on the private well commu
 nity is a serious public health issue as exposure to contaminated well wa
 ter has been linked to waterborne disease outbreaks\, lead poisoning\, bi
 rth defects\, and other serious adverse health effects. Data limitations 
 and availability issues have hindered the ability of health departments t
 o quantify and characterize at-risk and vulnerable private wells. This pr
 esentation discusses lessons learned after three major hurricanes (2017 H
 arvey\, 2018 Florence\, and 2024 Debby) and our team's current strategies
  to support state and local health departments with GIS-enabled tools and
  associated training following Hurricane Helene.

DESCRIPTION:While traditionally considered the domain of chemists and indu
 strial hygienists\, our indoor atmosphere is now an active frontier for e
 nvironmental engineers.  Indoor air carries microcellular hallmarks of li
 fe - both in primary and weathered forms.  In this context\, bioaerosols 
 are defined as a generic class of airborne particulate matter comprised e
 ither in whole or in part of biogenic materials.  The contribution of the
  most common primary biopolymers\, to the pool of atmospheric organic car
 bon remains relatively unknown\, as is their potential to weather and oth
 erwise contribute to infectious or toxicological activity - indoors and o
 ut.   New ways to characterize and control the aerobiology suspended in t
 he built environment will be presented through the context of bioaerosol 
 case studies of health care settings\, occupied schools and natural disas
 ters.

 cience\, Fall 2024 Seminar Series\, welcomes James Berry\, a Chemist with
  DEVCOM Army Research Lab\, who will be giving a talk on "ARO Reactive Ch
 emical Systems Program Overview."\n\nABSTRACT: As part of its mission to 
 "operationalize science\," the DEVCOM US Army Research Laboratory priorit
 izes the discovery of innovative functional materials designed for extrem
 e environments. Towards that end\, the goal of the Reactive Chemical Syst
 ems Program at the Army Research Office (ARO) is to achieve a molecular l
 evel understanding of surface/interfacial activity and dynamic nanostruct
 ured chemical systems to provide leap-ahead advancements in Army relevant
  materials for the benefit of the Soldier. This program supports basic\, 
 fundamental research in the areas of surfaces\, catalysis\, interfaces\, 
 coatings\, and novel and stimuli-responsive chemical systems. The program
  is divided into three primary focus areas: (i) Nanostructure Surface Int
 eractions and Reactivity\, (ii) Development of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl S
 ubstances (PFAS) Alternatives\, and (iii) Synthetic Molecular Systems. In
  this seminar\, Dr. Berry will provide an overview of ARO\, the Sciences 
 of Extreme Materials Competency\, as well as the programmatic priorities 
 of the Reactive Chemical Systems Program.  Recent program highlights/acco
 mplishments and their potential applicability to the Army will be discuss
 ed.  Finally\, engagement with ARO\, ranging from topics including fundin
 g mechanisms\, the proposal submission process\, and government service a
 s a career path will also be discussed.\n\nDR. JAMES BERRY is a Chemist s
 erving DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL) at Aberdeen Proving Ground\,
  Maryland. He received his BS in Chemistry from Ursinus College\, College
 ville\, PA in 2005.  From there\, he obtained his PhD in Chemistry from t
 he University of Delaware\, Newark\, DE in 2010.\nDr. Berry joined ARL as
  an ORISE senior researcher in 2013 following a postdoctoral fellowship a
 t the Brain Science Institute at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  W
 hile at ARL\, he has developed research-based solutions in the areas of n
 ovel polymers for multifunctional use within biological applications\, de
 velopment of novel mechanophores and their incorporation into elastomeric
  materials of interest for testing under high-rate impact\, and the inves
 tigation of reactivity between lithium-ion battery electrolyte solvents a
 nd materials of interest under Army relevant scenarios.

DESCRIPTION:It is widely known today that portland cement concrete is the 
 most commonly used manufactured material. It is also well-known that port
 land cement production contributes approximately 8 to 10 percent of globa
 l anthropogenic CO2 emissions. However\, what is often overlooked in such
  statements is the fact that portland cement concrete-based materials con
 stitute about 50% of what humanity produces and 30% of what humanity uses
 \, including fossil fuels. Additionally\, we often fail to acknowledge th
 at the composition of the Earth's crust does not allow us to produce any 
 other economically viable alternative material on such a large scale. Let
  me be clear: I do not suggest that we should not strive to reduce the ca
 rbon footprint of concrete\; however\, we need to be realistic and seek s
 olutions that are both feasible and economically viable. In this talk\, I
  will elaborate on my thoughts regarding potential solutions and the chal
 lenges involved.\nGiven the large-scale use of portland cement concrete\,
  it is no surprise that it has significant environmental emissions and im
 plications\, but the interaction of concrete with the environment goes be
 yond just CO2 release. Concrete forms a substantial part of our infrastru
 cture\, and in this talk\, I will discuss two topics related to how concr
 ete interacts with our environment beyond CO2 emissions. First\, I will e
 xplain how concrete can become a source of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl
  substances) release due to exposure to Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF)\
 ; PFAS can infiltrate concrete\, leading to its release from concrete ove
 r time. I will highlight some of our findings on the mechanisms of PFAS t
 ransport in concrete under unsaturated conditions. Secondly\, I will disc
 uss the transport of Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and benzene in concrete\, 
 a problem that arises when a concrete pipe carries water through soils co
 ntaminated with chlorinated solvents or hydrocarbon fuels. I will describ
 e the transport mechanisms involved and how we have measured them. In eac
 h of these areas\, I will share my thoughts on future research directions
  and the fundamental questions that remain for the next generation of sci
 entists and engineers to address.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: For centuries\, researchers have sought out ways to 
 connect disparate areas of knowledge. With the advent of Artificial Intel
 ligence (AI)\, we can now rigorously explore relationships that span acro
 ss distinct areas - such as\, mechanics and biology\, or science and art 
 - to deepen our understanding\, to accelerate innovation\, and to drive s
 cientific discovery. However\, many existing AI methods have limitations 
 when it comes to physical intuition\, and often hallucinate. To address t
 hese challenges\, we present research that blurs the boundary between phy
 sics-based and data-driven modeling through a series of physics-inspired 
 multimodal graph-based generative AI models\, set forth in a hierarchical
  multi-agent mixture-of-experts framework. The design of these models fol
 lows a biologically inspired approach where we re-use neural structures a
 nd dynamically arrange them in different patterns and utility\, implement
 ing a manifestation of the universality-diversity-principle that forms a 
 powerful principle in bioinspired materials. This new generation of model
 s is applied to the analysis and design of materials\, specifically to mi
 mic and improve upon biological materials. Applied specifically to protei
 n engineering\, the talk will cover case studies covering distinct scales
 \, from silk\, to collagen\, to biomineralized materials\, as well as app
 lications to medicine\, food and agriculture where materials design is cr
 itical to achieve performance targets.

DESCRIPTION:As the volume of hypoxic waters grows around the globe\, numer
 ical models are increasingly used to understand the drivers of hypoxia an
 d guide decisions that will mitigate its impacts. Such models represent m
 icrobial processes\, such as photosynthesis and decomposition\, which act
 ively cycle nutrients and particulate material that influence hypoxia. Al
 though microorganisms are critical to such transformations\, these models
  do not typically incorporate any microbial observations\, except for chl
 orophyll a from phytoplankton\, into model validation in part because dat
 a to constrain such representation is lacking. Metagenomic information co
 uld provide useful constraints for these models although it is not clear 
 how best to use this information in models. To advance the use of metagen
 omics to improve models used to manage water quality in the Chesapeake Ba
 y\, major trends were identified in metagenomic observations of metabolic
  gene abundance across an observational dataset taken during the spring a
 nd summer of 2017 in Chesapeake Bay\, including several gene sets that ar
 e strongly predictable from environmental variables typically simulated b
 y models. Next\, a subset of genes responsible for the largest amount of 
 variation across the dataset and associated with primary production\, nit
 rification\, denitrification\, and sulfur cycling\, was compared to rates
  predicted by a numerical model that represents these processes. Modeled 
 rates or biomass indicators (i.e. chlorophyll) are significantly correlat
 ed with many of the associated genes. However\, interesting discrepancies
  were found\, such as an overabundance of photosynthesis and denitrificat
 ion genes in the deep waters in the spring where they are not expected as
 sociated with taxonomic changes between spring and summer. Our work highl
 ights the potential of metagenomics as justification for adding taxonomic
 ally-resolved representations of key processes and could provide useful d
 ata to constrain a wide range of microbial processes in models.

DESCRIPTION:This seminar will discuss core opportunities and challenges at
  the intersection of experimental mechanics and machine learning. The app
 lication of data-driven and machine learning approaches to the mechanics 
 of structural materials under a range of representative applications will
  be discussed\, largely in the context of enabling high throughput experi
 mentation and analysis\, and in enabling new modes of structural health m
 onitoring. Examples will include i) the use of spectral clustering to ide
 ntify damage mechanisms from their acoustic emission spectra in composite
 s\; ii) addressing the pervasive data scarcity problem by using generativ
 e adversarial networks in the synthesis of realistic morphologies for hig
 h throughput predictive simulations\; (iii) addressing the spatial and te
 mporal resolutions of limited experimental data that is vital to our unde
 rstanding of material response\, by adapting physics-informed superresolu
 tion approaches to materials data structures\; and (iv) the high-throughp
 ut segmentation\, identification\, and analysis of the relationships betw
 een microstructure and deformation mechanisms. This talk will also incorp
 orate discussion of the need for\, and requirements of\, trustworthy mach
 ine learning approaches in the physical sciences.

 e MEMS Seminar lecture: "Task Allocation and Strategy Adaptation in Teams
  of Autonomous Vehicles and Humans."\n\nABSTRACT: Autonomous vehicles are
  increasingly thought of as team members alongside humans in both militar
 y and civilian applications. Such autonomous agents are capable of handli
 ng dangerous tasks but are limited in their reactions to unforeseen event
 s. At the same time\, humans have more adaptive and creative problem-solv
 ing skills but are limited in terms of handling some specific tasks and m
 anaging cognitive loads. The inclusion of autonomy within a team requires
  a significant effort to train agents to distribute tasks dynamically for
  optimal operation. In addition\, the need to address diverse requirement
 s requires heterogeneous teams where agents can have different capabiliti
 es and levels of risk tolerance. While heterogeneity in multi-agent teams
  offers benefits\, new challenges arise including how to find optimal het
 erogeneous team compositions and how to distribute tasks dynamically amon
 g agents in complex operations.\n\nThis presentation will discuss modelin
 g tools for autonomous vehicles with focus on artificial intelligence alg
 orithms for heterogeneous agents to learn dynamically task distributions 
 in teams with humans and other autonomous agents through reinforcement le
 arning in synthetic environments.\n\nBIO: Bogdan I. Epureanu completed hi
 s Ph.D. at Duke University in 1999. He is the Roger L. McCarthy Professor
  and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineer
 ing at the University of Michigan\, with a courtesy appointment in Electr
 ical Engineering and Computer Science. Dr. Epureanu is the Director of th
 e Automotive Research Center\, which leads the way in areas of autonomy o
 f ground systems\, including vehicle dynamics\, control\, and autonomous 
 behavior\, human-autonomy teaming\, high performance structures and mater
 ials\, intelligent power systems\, and fleet operations and vehicle syste
 m of systems integration. His research focuses on nonlinear dynamics of c
 omplex systems\, such as teaming of autonomous vehicles\, enhanced aircra
 ft safety and performance\, early detection of neurodegenerative diseases
 \, and forecasting tipping points in engineered and physical systems such
  as disease epidemics and ecology.

 inspection aided by robotics applications\, enhancing human decision-maki
 ng with Artificial-Intelligence (AI) and machine-enabled visual analysis.
  Accordingly\, interfaces of image-based automatic defect-detection and v
 isual inspectors are explored focusing on Augmented Reality (AR) systems.
  A standalone human interface for automatic defect detection and localiza

 ithm in AR headset's platform. The interface also quantifies anomalies in
  the pixel units using a horizontal measurement algorithm improved by the
  edge gradient analysis and employs a nonstationary pixel unit conversion
  algorithm to translate the size of anomalies to the engineering units. A
 dditionally\, human interfaces for intuitive robot programming are presen
 ted. Compared to other approaches\, AR interfaces enhance precision\, red
 uce setup time\, and allow for more intuitive interaction. This seminar a
 lso summarizes the research developing a new interactive interface for in
 tuitive robot programming that allows humans to adjust the kinematic cont
 roller's parameters or use a different outer-loop controller that is an a
 lternative to the time-consuming adjustments of the holograms. Automatic 
 robot control in human proximity is examined where human intention predic
 tion is essential for safe robot planning. This automated control with th
 e AR interface open a bi-lateral communication line between humans and ro
 bots. The practical application and validation of the model is examined t
 hrough experiments related to inspections and manufacturing involving hum
 an upper limb movement in interaction with robots.

DESCRIPTION:The Colorado River Basin (CRB) is a vitally important resource
  for Western US water supply\, agriculture\, and hydropower.  The 1922 Co
 lorado River Compact promoted growth by allocating a fixed amount of wate
 r to Upper and Lower Basin states\, not foreseeing potential conflicts ov
 er inadequate supply. Lakes Powell and Mead have the capacity to store up
  to four years' average use\, but storage has generally decreased since 2
 000. Although the 2007 Interim Guidelines (IG) set up a system of water s
 hortages that were linked to reservoir storage elevations\, the IG and su
 bsequent drought management plans were not enough to protect system stora
 ge given continued drought. These regulations are set to expire in 2026\,
  with a new management plan currently being negotiated. In support of thi
 s effort\, the US Bureau of Reclamation has sponsored a research program 
 on Decision Making Under Deep Uncertainty (DMDU) methods at CU Boulder's 
 Center for Advanced Decision Support for Water and Environmental Systems 
 (CADSWES). Reclamation created a publicly available DMDU web tool (https:
 //www.crbpost2026dmdu.org/)\, allowing anyone to create policies and eval
 uate their performance under a wide array of possibilities of future wate
 r supply and demand for multiple output dimensions.\nThis presentation wi
 ll discuss our ongoing research on DMDU methods in the CRB. DMDU seeks to
  address challenges including conflicting goals of multiple stakeholders 
 (preserving storage versus preventing shortages)\, divergent potential fu
 ture conditions (a range of drier and wetter hydrologic inputs)\, and com
 plicated relationships between decisions and outcomes. We use multi-objec
 tive simulation-based optimization with the CRSS model to generate polici
 es. The Self Organizing Map (SOM) is introduced to intelligently organize
  a diverse range of scenarios\, allowing users to navigate the data and d
 iscover how policies' performance is transformed across a changing landsc
 ape of potential conditions. The SOM can visualize any policy's performan
 ce in coherent groupings of input scenarios\, and those groupings can sub
 sequently be used to select input scenarios for robust optimization and a
 daptive management. The ultimate goal of this work is to help Reclamation
  and Basin stakeholders maintain flexibility when future conditions becom
 e more severe than originally anticipated\, as is currently happening in 
 the CRB.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  \nMost microbes in drinking water do not pose a hum
 an health risk\, but the presence of pathogenic microbes can have severe 
 public health implications. Hence\, the current paradigm for drinking wat
 er quality management includes technologies (1) to inactivate\, starve\, 
 or remove microorganisms during treatment and minimize growth during wate
 r distribution and (2) source-to-tap monitoring focused on harmful and pa
 thogenic microorganisms. Yet\, every liter of drinking water can contain 
 tens of millions of diverse microorganisms that form a complex and dynami
 c drinking water microbiome.  This talk will present hypotheses based on 
 field data on potential ecological and physiological mechanisms underpinn
 ing the persistence and proliferation of the drinking water microbiome. T
 hese insights necessitate the development of novel approaches for holisti
 c monitoring and management of the drinking water microbiome.This talk wi
 ll also highlight ongoing work on the development of low-cost optical- an
 d DNA sequencing-based methods for real-time and quantitative characteriz
 ation of microbial communities in drinking water systems.\nBio: \nDr Amee
 t Pinto is an Environmental Engineer and Carlton S Wilder Associate Profe
 ssor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Institute of Techn
 ology (Georgia Tech). Ameet is a Chemical Engineer from the Institute of 
 Chemical Technology (University of Mumbai) with post-graduate degrees in 
 Environmental Engineering from the University of Alaska (2005) and Virgin
 ia Tech\, USA (2009). Their research has received support and recognition
  through prestigious grants and awards like EPSRC's Bright IDEAS Award in
  2015 in the UK\, the NSF CAREER and ISME/IWA Rising Star Awards in 2018\
 , Paul L Busch Award for Innovation in Applied Water Quality Research in 
 2019\, and the IWA MEWE Mid-Career Award in 2023. They were inducted as a
  Fellow of the International Water Association in 2024. Their research fo
 cuses on the development and application of state-of-the-art molecular an
 d modelling tools to monitor and manage the microbiology of drinking wate
 r systems to improve the sustainability of treatment processes and enhanc
 e the safety and security of drinking water.

DESCRIPTION:The Maputo Sanitation (MapSan) trial is a long-term study of t
 he health impact of upgraded shared\, private latrines constructed by Wat
 er and Sanitation for the Urban Poor in urban Maputo\, Mozambique. Childr
 en born into households served by these facilities experienced reduced ex
 posure to enteric pathogens and increased linear growth compared with a c
 omparable cohort of children served by existing poor-quality sanitation. 
 This trial provides important new evidence on urban sanitation's role in 
 supporting public health and well-being.
