DESCRIPTION:Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) Direc
tor Catherine Marsh will visit Duke's campus to provide an overview of IA
RPA's programs and engagement opportunities. The agency's focus areas are
artificial intelligence\, machine learning\, quantum and synthetic biolo
gy. The agency also funds research across a broad spectrum of disciplines
 \, including engineering\, mathematics\, computer science\, physics\, che

DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nSystems engineering and associated challenges become
increasingly important for the well-being and safety of our society of h
umans. Motivated by this formidable push towards ever more complex system
s of all sizes\, spectacular failures\, and decades of questioning in a v
ariety of contexts and endeavors\, this talk hypothesizes a theory of com
plex systems engineering\, that is\, a scientific theory in which an engi
neered system can be seen as a un-invalidated scientific hypothesis arisi
ng from a convergent mix of rigorous mathematical and validated experimen
tal constructs. In its simplest form\, it is a manufactured\, un-invalida
ted scientific hypothesis arising from a mathematical theorem similar to
those found in mathematical physics. The talk begins with the scientific
hypothesis underlying this theory\, and arguments in favor of it are disp
layed\, as well as some of its practical consequences in terms of complex
system design and future research. Then\, a limited set of experiments i
s presented to try and invalidate the theory by confronting it to existin
g educational programs in systems engineering in the United States of Ame
rica. Concurrent with these invalidation efforts\, this talk also argues
that there is a serious and growing lack of education in mathematics and/
or engineering science in most\, if not all\, engineering programs. Such
weaknesses challenge the industrial value of all corporate or government
institutions who are in the pursuit of complex engineered systems excelle
 nce.\n\nBiography\nEric Feron is a Professor of Biological\, Electrical\,
Computer\, and Mechanical Engineering at King Abdullah University of Sci
ence and Technology\, where he co-directs the Robotics\, Intelligent Syst
ems\, and Control laboratory (RISClab). Eric has had appointments with E
cole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile\, France\; the Georgia Institute of T
echnology\, USA\; the Institut Supérieur de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace
 \, Sup'Aéro campus\, France\; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\,
USA\; and the Office National d'Etudes et Recherches Aérospatiales\, Fra
nce. Eric Feron trained as a naval officer of the watch on nuclear submar
ines (France)\, and as a private pilot (USA). Feron's research focuses on
leveraging his knowledge of and contributions to control theory\, comput
er science\, and optimization to address problems having to do with auton
 omy\, robotic agility\, transportation\, and other complex systems-level
 challenges.

DESCRIPTION:Investigation of poly(ester urea) properties and their use tow
ards infection control in medical devices\n\nTo this day\, there is a nee
d for biomedical materials\, specifically as it relates to surgical impla
 nts. Poly(ester urea)s (PEUs) are a class of amorphous\, highly tunable\,
and resorbable polymers that can cover a large window of mechanical and
physical properties. By focusing on a biologically compatible material th
at is based on naturally occurring amino acids\, we can combat adverse si
de effects\, such as inflammation\, commonly associated with other polyme
ric devices on the market. In this work\, we synthesized and thoroughly c
haracterized a diverse library of PEUs and performed further testing in v
ivo with a select subset to monitor their breakdown. We were able to iden
tify trends in degradation based on water uptake profiles. This could ult
imately assist in improved and informed biomaterial selection moving forw
ard.\nAdditionally\, a direct application was explored with PEUs for the
delivery of antibiotics. Bacterial infections pose a large threat in the
clinic that can lead to repeated invasive surgeries and even patient mort
ality. Therefore\, designing a biodegradable pouch that provides controll
ed site-specific therapy is of great interest. Our formulation focuses on
the dual release of minocycline and rifampin which are combined with the
polymer matrix itself. Herein\, we experiment with a valine and phenylal
anine PEU copolymer. Our results demonstrate that the drug-loaded\, elect
rospun nanofiber mats are effective against various strains of staphyloco
cci species in vitro and can completely eradicate S. aureus after 14 days
in a rabbit model. This part of the research highlights our PEU device a
s a promising candidate for preventing infections.
