DESCRIPTION:Film Screening: \n\n"Dìdi"\n(Sean Wang\, 2024\, 91 min\, USA\,
English and Mandarin with English subtitles\, DCP)\n\nIn 2008\, during t
he last month of summer before high school begins\, an impressionable 13-
year-old Taiwanese American boy learns what his family can't teach him: h
ow to skate\, how to flirt\, and how to love your mom.\n\n"A wonderfully
uncomfortable\, deeply hilarious coming-of-age movie ... DÌDI plays like
an extended and surprisingly welcome visit to the filmmaker's childhood b
edroom." - Globe and Mail\n\n"[T]he secret to the film's poignancy and la
sting power is the way Sean Wang conceives the character of Chungsing-an
artist whose talent for and dedication to painting goes largely unnoticed
both inside her house and in the contests she enters-and the manner in w
hich the luminous Joan Chen plays her. The LAST EMPEROR star cycles throu
gh regret\, nervousness\, resentment and an intense love for children who
se lives she barely understands\, all with such deftness that you don't r
ealize until it's over that the film is as much about Chungsing's potenti
al artistic flowering as it is about Chris'." - The Observer

DESCRIPTION:Step into a heartfelt musical celebration as Duke violinist Er
ic Pritchard and an ensemble of distinguished guest musicians honor the 7
1st birthday of North Carolina composer Bill Robinson\, a beloved creativ
e voice in the Triangle's musical landscape.\n\nPritchard\, first violini
st of Duke's Ciompi Quartet and a performer praised for his "precision\,
eloquence\, and elegance" by critics nationwide\, leads a group of Robins
 on's closest collaborators-friends\, colleagues\, and longtime admirers f
rom around the region. The ensemble includes William Henry Curry\, Music
Director of the Durham Symphony as well as members of the North Carolina
Symphony and faculty from North Carolina State University\, forming a cha
mber group uniquely connected to Robinson's life and artistic journey.\n\
nThe program features premiere chamber versions of three of Robinson's ne
west works. His music\, known for its lyrical clarity\, rhythmic imaginat
ion\, and emotionally direct style\, reflects decades of compositional re
finement and community engagement. Hearing these pieces performed by musi
cians who know him personally-and who have championed his work for years-
adds a rare layer of intimacy and authenticity to the experience.\n\nHeld
in the acoustically vibrant Nelson Music Room\, this birthday tribute pr
omises an afternoon that is both celebratory and deeply moving: a living
portrait of a composer whose contributions continue to enrich the region'
s artistic identity.\n\nFree and open to the public. All are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:The Imaginary of Disobedience is a one-day workshop to be held
at Duke University on Martin Luther King Jr. Day\, January 19\, 2026. Th
e workshop aims to conceptualize the lineaments of dissent over the last
century or so as a global phenomenon. It brings together a range of schol
ars and artists to explore the connections between heterogeneous sites an
d contexts through a culture of disobedience. With a particular focus on
visual practices-especially photography-the workshop will consider how im
ages shape\, record\, and reimagine histories of anticolonial and antiaut
horitarian resistance.\n\nFeaturing presentations by: Martin Berger\; Avr
 ati Bhatnagar\; Jan Hoffman French\; John D. French\; Prashant Kidambi\;
Wing Ki Lee\; Gabrielle Moser\; Sumathi Ramaswamy\; Tom Rankin\; Mira Xen
ia Schwerda\; Vazira Zamindar.\n\nThe workshop is free and open to facult
y\, students\, and researchers. Registered participants will receive pre-
circulated papers in advance of the event.\n\nThe workshop is free to att
end\, but registration is required\, as space may be limited.\n\nREGISTER

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nUnderstanding infection and immunity-and immune re
sponses in contexts ranging from arthritis to cancer-requires linking mol
 ecular\, cellular\, tissue\, and whole-body dynamics across scales. Multi
 scale Virtual-Tissue models-physics-based\, multicellular\, agent-based s
imulations-provide a framework for connecting intracellular networks\, ce
ll behaviors\, and tissue microenvironments\, and can be embedded within
physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models of dosimetry. These m
ethods are maturing into practical biomedical tools through platforms suc
 h as CompuCell3D\, PhysiCell\, Tissue Forge\, Morpheus\, and CHASTE.\nI w
ill introduce this modeling approach and illustrate its application to in
fection and immune dynamics\, including models of SARS-CoV-2 infection\,
antiviral pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics\, and the role of spatial
and metabolic heterogeneity in shaping therapeutic outcomes. I will also
show how these models integrate immune cell recruitment\, cytokine dynam
ics\, and tissue damage and repair\, yielding predictions that cannot eme
rge from well-mixed models alone.\n\nLooking forward\, there are both opp
ortunities and challenges in modeling the immune system and in designing
effective control strategies. Scientifically\, many aspects of immune rec
ognition remain uncertain\, immune responses are highly complex and conte
xt dependent\, and spatial heterogeneity is central to outcomes. Clinical
ly\, if we want to realize immune digital twins for medical use\, we face
the impossibility of directly measuring immune state in real time\; most
data come from serum assays\, which mask spatial inhomogeneity within th
e patient. Moreover\, immune states change rapidly and stochastically\, w
hile our current therapeutic modulators are relatively coarse and non-spe
cific. Addressing these scientific and translational hurdles will require
close collaboration between experimentalists\, modelers\, and clinicians
. I will conclude by outlining how Duke's new center can play a pivotal r
ole in bridging these gaps\, linking advanced experimental platforms with
predictive multiscale modeling to move toward patient-specific immune di
gital twins. \n\nThis seminar series is organized by the Center for Multi
scale Immune Systems Modeling (MISM)\, funded by NIAID/NIH (U54AI191253).

DESCRIPTION:In this seminar\, Dr. Mishrra will describe how integrating co
ncepts from environmental geochemistry\, materials science\, and water qu
ality engineering is essential for addressing urgent challenges in drinki
ng water supply and distribution and in sustainable resource management.
Her talk will highlight contaminants such as lead\, copper\, and hexavale
nt chromium in drinking water sources\, and will discuss strategies to re
move them using sustainable materials that can meet increasingly stringen
t drinking water standards. She will also outline a broader vision for a
circular water economy that moves beyond treatment alone by valorizing wa
stewater and legacy waste streams\, with particular emphasis on critical
mineral recovery from acid mine drainage. Her work pairs solid-phase char
acterization with chemical separation\, creating practical pathways to co
nvert complex waste streams into viable secondary sources of critical min
erals. Her interdisciplinary work advances next-generation technologies t
hat both mitigate toxic exposures and enable resource recovery.

DESCRIPTION:The Raab lab is focused on understanding how chromatin remodel
ers are assembled and interact with the genome to impact gene regulation.
Our current projects are aimed at the interaction between RNA-processing
machinery and post-translational modifications on SWI/SNF. In addition\,
these complexes are frequently dysregulated in diseases such as cancer.
In liver cancer\, chromatin dysregulation is a driving event\, and we aim
to identify new therapeutic targets in this context using vitro and in v

\, 2026\, the FHI will host "Building the Parallel University: Towards a
New Cultural Order\," a conversation with Newfield and Donald H. Taylor\,
Professor of Public Policy</p>\n<p>Do we need now to create a "shadow un

s features be\, and what would it do differently? What kind of higher edu
cation would a non-capitalist or socialist or neocommunist society want?
We'll discuss ways in which short-term responses to right-wing attacks on
universities can be turned into new ideas for better universities and be
tter interventions in the wider society.</p>\n<p>Christopher Newfield was
Distinguished Professor of English at the University of California\, San
ta Barbara and is now Director of Research at the Independent Social Rese
arch Foundation in London. He has written a trilogy of books on the unive
rsity as an intellectual and social institution: Ivy and Industry: Busine

cs Matter? Academic Life in the Quantified University (Johns Hopkins Univ

literary and cultural knowledge\, the future of higher education\, and t
he culture of social equality.</p>\n<p>Don Taylor is Professor in the Dep
artment of Family Medicine and Community Health\, Executive Core Faculty
Member\, Duke-Margolis Institute for Health Policy\, and Associate of the
Duke Initiative for Science & Society Affiliate\, Duke Global Health Ins
titute. Taylor is a health policy scholar who has studied rural health\,
identification of underserved areas\, and the economics of smoking and ce

DESCRIPTION:When the Supreme Court decided that taking race into account a
s a remedy for racial disparities is unconstitutional in the 2023 Harvard
and University of North Carolina admissions cases\, it seemed to finally
have demolished a weak but at least somewhat effective way of ending. ra
cial inequality. However\, the story continues. From Berry's work in the
Nixon administration developing goals and timetables for affirmative acti
on on hiring women and contractors of color to desegregation issues as ch
ief U.S. education official during the Carter administration and then-Pre
sident Bill Clinton's appointing her as the first chairwoman of the U.S.
Commission on Civil Rights in 1993\, she has been very much involved in t
he history of affirmative action and diversity. Access to quality higher
education became a major goal of the civil rights movement pressed on pol
iticians. When Martin Luther King was assassinated predominantly white co
lleges and universities began to admit more black students opposition to
affirmative action as reverse discrimination against whites became even m
ore heated. When the Supreme Court decided the Bakke case in 1978 officia
lly ended affirmative action replacing it with diversity DEI became the n
ew form of racial remedies story. For reasons of morality\, demography\,
and because having quality education as a goal and the economic needs of
serving clients and political constitutions and the perpetual search for
an orderly society\, labels may change but the search for civil rights re
medies for racial inequality is not over.
