DESCRIPTION:We were honored when Duke approached us about curating this ex
hibit. The history of the decoy is broad and deep. The story that we prim
arily wanted to tell is that of the transformation of the decoy as a util
itarian object to that of a work of art.\n\nThose who are drawn to decoys
are\, typically\, equally drawn by lure of the outdoors. Fishing\, hikin
g\, and just enjoying the beauty of a clear day can also be seen in the e
ye of a finely carved duck. If this inspires you\, you might be asking yo
urself\, "how can I learn more?" We are so glad that you did.\nMany of th
e decoys you have seen today will be offered for sale\, at auction\, in L
eland Little's Spring Sporting Art Auction on March 2\, 2023. We invite y
ou to come to our Hillsborough gallery and speak with our Sporting Art Di
rector\, Robbie Smith. Use our auction as a classroom to learn more - rea
d the catalogues\, learn about the carvers and how these ducks were used.
You might just be inspired to bring one home. Leland Little Auctions

DESCRIPTION:On display in the John Hope Franklin Center Gallery are drawin
g interventions by Renzo Ortega on Llanchama (or Yanchama). Llanchama is
a natural textile used by multiple indigenous communities of the Amazon.
Because of its origin\, it does not need to be waived\, it is considered
a "Gift" from mother nature\, and also a way to teach how to make textil
es in situated contexts. It is widely used in the production of material
culture. It comes directly from the great sapucaia inner bark (Lecythis P
isonis)\, that peels naturally due to its rapid growth in the forest. Lla
nchama is used as material for ritual garments\, blankets\, diapers (for
babies)\, baskets\, sifters\, nets\, etc.\n\nOrtega argues about this ser
ies of drawing Interventions on llanchama\, "The Patrimony series respond
s to the global evil of heritage destruction\, the physical destruction o
f objects from the past\, and the conceptual destruction of people's thou
ghts and cultural contributions in the present. These drawings are an act
of shaping and destroying. A sudden change is generated not by the weath
er or the erosion\; humanity is the one who killed history. Beyond the fo
rmal elements of drawing\, the physical process of these works creates an
imprint that resists and adapts to intentional manipulation. With these
works\, I create resistant traces\, physically and thoughtfully\, to foll
ow through on the projected path."\n\nThe exhibit will be open to January
16\, 2023 through May 18\, 2023.

y members across Duke and Durham take this opportunity to visit the Ruby
and immerse themselves in Bill's work." - Vice Provost for the Arts\, Joh

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Jonathan Parr\, Assistant Prof
essor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of North C
arolina School of Medicine. \n\nIncreasing reports from Africa confirm em
ergence of malaria parasites with mutations that allow them to escape det
ection by widely used malaria diagnostic tests. These parasites threaten
progress toward malaria elimination and have prompted a coordinated respo
nse by the WHO. Dr. Parr's laboratory at UNC supports surveillance for th
ese parasites across Africa and is applying novel sequencing approaches t
o study their evolution and spread. \n\n \n\nAttendees are encouraged to
read Feleke et al. 2021\, "Plasmodium falciparum is evolving to escape ma
laria rapid diagnostic tests in Ethiopia" (doi: 10.1038/s41564-021-00962-
4) and the WHO's statement by the Malaria Policy Advisory Group on the ur
gent need to address the high prevalence of pfhrp2/3 gene deletions in th
e Horn of Africa and beyond. \n\n\nClick "More Event Information" below t

DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract: \nThe COVID-19 pandemic led to unprecedented
disruptions by impacting the functioning and outcomes of the education s
ystem. In particular\, higher education faced challenges such as technolo
gical barriers\, familiarity with online tools\, delivery to students wit
h disabilities and managing the work-life balance. An additional challeng
e faced by the Health Informatics and Information Management (HIIM) commu
nity was scheduling clinicals online. \n\nProfessional organizations such
as the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) steppe
d up and mitigated the online resource deficit by allowing temporary acce
ss to their materials and classes for free. However\, the impacts of COVI
D-19 on HIIM higher education programs have not been realized. Data was c
ollected using a 37-item survey designed to gauge the COVID-19 impact on
teaching\, course delivery mechanisms and outcomes of HIIM in higher educ
ation. One open-ended item question was thematically analyzed. Our result
s identified facilitators and barriers related to leadership\, student en
gagement\, virtual clinicals and technology.\n\nInstructor Biosketch:\nDr
. Prerna Dua is a professor of Health Informatics and Information Managem
ent and Program Director for the Masters in Health Informatics at Louisia
na Tech University. Her research focuses in areas of Translational Health
care Informatics and Machine Learning. Dr. Dua has published in a variety
of top-tier peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. She has c
o-authored one book and four book chapters. She has been the principal i
nvestigator or co-investigator on numerous grants and contracts at the bo
th federal and state level. She is active in the American Medical Informa
tics Association and serves on various committees. She was recognized by
AMIA and was featured as "Faces of AMIA" and received the AHIMA Triumph a
ward in research in 2015. He is a member of the Health Informatics Accred
itation Council for CAHIIM (Commission for Accreditation for Health Infor
matics and Information Management)\; she also serves as a peer reviewer f
or CAHIIM. \n\nZoom Meeting link:\nhttps://duke.zoom.us/j/2186100752?pwd=

DESCRIPTION:What's the difference between mentoring and coaching? In US hi
gher education\, "mentoring" often implies role-modeling and offering adv
ice\, whereas coaching is an increasingly popular\, evidence-based method
to empower people to be accountable for their own growth and development
. Unlike role models and advisors\, coaches listen more than they talk. T
hey ask powerful questions\, and create lots of room for people to reflec
t and see things in new ways.\n\nIf you'd like more strategies in your me
ntoring toolkit--especially in cases where you'd like mentees to take mor
e ownership of their progress--this workshop is for you. We will spend ti
me in small groups developing our active listening skills\, and also prac
tice a few basic coaching conversation models. We will also discuss how m
entors might apply a "coaching mindset" to their work as mentors more gen
erally.\n\nModerator: Maria LaMonaca Wisdom\, Director of Faculty Mentori

DESCRIPTION:Congenital heart defects (CHD) arise through genetic and envir
onmental disruptions to normal heart development and are the most common
form of birth defects. Although sequencing analyses of children with CHD
have identified loss of function variants in numerous genes\, the molecul
ar mechanisms underlying most forms of CHD remain unknown. Importantly\,
determining the contribution of non-protein coding regions of the genome
and pinpointing the specific subpopulations of cardiac progenitor cells a
ffected in development are critical challenges in understanding the etiol
ogy of CHD and identifying novel therapeutic interventions. As a postdoct
oral fellow under the mentorship of Deepak Srivastava\, I directly addres
sed these problems by first generating a comprehensive and temporal singl
e cell chromatin accessibility and transcriptomic atlas of early mouse he
art development. In collaboration with Professor Katie Pollard (Gladstone
Institute)\, we then developed novel machine learning algorithms to iden
tify cell type enriched enhancers in cardiac and neural crest progenitors
and showed how loss of a transcription factor\, Tbx1\, can disrupt essen
tial cell signaling programs leading to CHD. Finally\, we designed CRISPR
-perturbation systems (CRISPR-a/i) in human pluripotent stem cell models
to identify dosage sensitive genes on Chromosome 21 that lead to CHD in c
hildren with Down Syndrome. My future research program will integrate the
se established resources of single cell genomics\, machine learning algor
ithms and CRISPR functional perturbation screens to provide novel insight
s into previously intractable problems in heart development and congenita
l disease.\n\nContact Greg Crawford (greg.crawford at duke dot edu) and D
ebby Silver (debra.silver at duke dot edu) with any questions.

DESCRIPTION:The session will be about CDCs updates to our cancer cluster g
uidance that will be released soon. The goal will be to motivate academia
to coordinate with public health officials to perform more quantitative
assessments of cancer cluster alarms within communities where cancer clus
ter alarms are raised\, and to motivate research across communities to be
tter leverage statistical power to assess unusual patterns of cancer over
larger geographies. We have developed better quantitative tools for asse
ssing cancer clusters but the scientific capacity to use them varies wide
ly within public health departments. Therefore\, academic research center
s could help fill that void to assist health departments with these types
of investigations and to leverage their potential to learn more about th
e environmental risks factors for cancers.\n\n*UPDATED 2/2/2023*\nThis se
