DESCRIPTION:Mary Berridge's award-winning series of photographs is paired
with narratives written primarily by the subjects or their parents. The e
xhibition\, "Visible Spectrum\," offers an intimate view of life with aut
ism\, as told from within an autism community\, which includes Berridge a
nd her son. It encourages an alternate way of seeing the condition\, in w
hich the diverse and unconventional perspectives of the autistic are valu
ed. It also explores the ways the autistic and their families navigate a
world which is not made for them and in which they are not always welcome
. Despite this\, the stories may surprise readers with their thought¬-pro
voking and affirmative viewpoints on autism and being different. The form
ally composed and quietly luminous portraits allude to the rich inner liv
es of their subjects. \n\n"Visible Spectrum" is curated by students in DO
CST 333S/733S "Photo Fever: Curating Photography Exhibitions" and will be
on display 11/14/2024 - 2/28/2025. \n\nThe Center for Documentary Studie
 s is open 9:00am-5:00pm\, Monday-Friday.

DESCRIPTION:Works by Albanian Photographer Zeni Alia - including a photogr
aphy series\, "Waiting for a Train\," and an installation\, "Good Luck!"
 - are on display at Duke's Center for Documentary Studies through March 3
1\, 2025. \n\nThe exhibit was curated by students while they were taking
Duke's "Photo Fever: Curating Photography Exhibitions" course in Fall 202
5.\n\n"Waiting for a Train" captures Albania's gradual shift away from it
s reliance on the country's oldest and only remaining train. "Good Luck!"
contends with the legacy of political and economic isolation in Albania
and the current trends in migration\n\nThe Center for Documentary Studies
is open 9:00am-5:00pm\, Monday-Friday\, except on holidays.

 , French w/ English subtitles\, DCP)\n\n-- Q&A to follow with Prof. Ranja
na Khanna (English/Gender\, Sexuality & Feminist Studies/Literature) and
Prof. Cybelle McFadden (French and Francophone Studies\, UNCG)\n\nClaire
Denis's rarely screened second feature is a radically physical cinematic
journey into the shadowy (under)world of illegal cockfighting. Isaach De
Bankole and Alex Descas star as Dah and Jocelyn\, two immigrants (from Be
nin and French Antilles\, respectively) living on the outskirts of Paris
who earn money from cockfights. The escalating violence of the bouts-at t
he encouragement of the white owner of the restaurant (Jean-Claude Brialy
) in whose basement the fights are held-takes its toll on the pair\, and
Jocelyn dreams of a life outside the brutal environment of feathered pugi
lism. Drawing inspiration from the writings of Frantz Fanon\, the ruggedl
y unsentimental and psychologically evocative NO FEAR\, NO DIE is a force
ful examination of the lives of immigrants in France and of the psychic t
oll of the violence imposed by colonizers upon the colonized.\n\n"Denis's

d of violence and exploitation." - Slant Magazine

DESCRIPTION:"...it spoils you for a while for other plays." - Caryl Church
ill \n\nWhen I say sleep\, you're free again. \n\nSee the play that shape
d a theatre landscape in this rare revival. When it opened in 2005 Tim Cr
ouch's An Oak Tree changed the rules of the game\, bringing into the cent
re of its action an actor who has neither seen nor read the play. \n\nIn
a performance of controlled virtuosity\, the playwright guides that acto
r through a story of loss\, suggestion and the power of the mind. \n\nTh
rough the life of this Obie Award-winning play Tim has worked with some o
f the great actors in the world - from Frances McDormand to F Murray Abra
ham\, from Sophie Okonedo to Laurie Anderson\, from Geoffrey Rush to Pete
r Dinklage. No two shows are the same. Each 'vividly celebrates the live\
, raw\, communal experience of theatre' (Financial Times). This is an aud
 ience experience like no other.

DESCRIPTION:About the Book\n\nShifts the conversation from abstract "globa
l warming" to the deeply human impacts of heat-and how our efforts to kee
p cool have made the problem worse.\n \nDespite the flames of record-brea
king temperatures licking at our feet\, most people fail to fully grasp t
he gravity of environmental overheating. What acquired habits and conveni
ences allow us to turn a blind eye with an air of detachment? Using examp
les from the hottest places on earth\, Heat\, a History shows how scienti
fic methods of accounting for heat and modern forms of acclimatization ha
ve desensitized us to climate change.\n \nUbiquitous air conditioning\, s
hifts in urban planning\, and changes in mobility have served as temporar
y remedies for escaping the heat in hotspots such as the twentieth-centur
y Middle East. However\, all of these measures have ultimately fueled not
only greenhouse gas emissions but also a collective myopia regarding the
impact of rising temperatures. Identifying the scientific\, economic\, a
nd cultural forces that have numbed our responses\, this book charts a wa
y out of short-term thinking and towards meaningful action.\n\nAbout the
Author\n\nOn Barak is a social and cultural historian of science and tech
nology and Professor of Middle Eastern and African History at Tel Aviv Un
iversity. He is author of four previous books\, including Powering Empire
: How Coal Made the Middle East and Sparked Global Carbonization.
