DESCRIPTION:Mary Berridge's award-winning series of photographs is paired
with narratives written primarily by the subjects or their parents. The e
xhibition\, "Visible Spectrum\," offers an intimate view of life with aut
ism\, as told from within an autism community\, which includes Berridge a
nd her son. It encourages an alternate way of seeing the condition\, in w
hich the diverse and unconventional perspectives of the autistic are valu
ed. It also explores the ways the autistic and their families navigate a
world which is not made for them and in which they are not always welcome
. Despite this\, the stories may surprise readers with their thought¬-pro
voking and affirmative viewpoints on autism and being different. The form
ally composed and quietly luminous portraits allude to the rich inner liv
es of their subjects. \n\n"Visible Spectrum" is curated by students in DO
CST 333S/733S "Photo Fever: Curating Photography Exhibitions" and will be
on display 11/14/2024 - 2/28/2025. \n\nThe Center for Documentary Studie
 s is open 9:00am-5:00pm\, Monday-Friday.

DESCRIPTION:Works by Albanian Photographer Zeni Alia - including a photogr
aphy series\, "Waiting for a Train\," and an installation\, "Good Luck!"
 - are on display at Duke's Center for Documentary Studies through March 3
1\, 2025. \n\nThe exhibit was curated by students while they were taking
Duke's "Photo Fever: Curating Photography Exhibitions" course in Fall 202
5.\n\n"Waiting for a Train" captures Albania's gradual shift away from it
s reliance on the country's oldest and only remaining train. "Good Luck!"
contends with the legacy of political and economic isolation in Albania
and the current trends in migration\n\nThe Center for Documentary Studies
is open 9:00am-5:00pm\, Monday-Friday\, except on holidays.

DESCRIPTION:Reduced-order models (ROM) provide practical solutions to prob
lems that were once considered too computationally expensive. In Cardiova
scular Mathematics\, surgical optimization takes Personalized Medicine to
an unprecedented level. Meanwhile\, Data Assimilation (DA) may play a pi
votal role in bridging theory with clinical practice. DA involves a set o
f techniques that integrate mathematical models with measurements to impr
ove our understanding of specific problems. In clinical settings\, effici
ent methods that combine physics-informed models with available data-i.e.
\, background and foreground knowledge-can offer a deeper and more precis
e understanding of a patient's condition. Although the mathematical formu
lations of these problems are well-established\, high computational costs
have historically prevented their translation into clinical practice. In
fact\, these problems require the timely solution of constrained optimiz
ation\, fluid and/or structural mechanics\; this is not feasible without
methods that reduce computational costs. ROM presents a viable workaround
\, with the potential for significant impact in medicine. In this talk\,
we will explore applications in pediatric surgery (specifically Total Cav
opulmonary Connection)\, as well as coronary diseases (including stent op
timization and wall shear stress data assimilation). We will also discuss
the use of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition and the potential role of Phy
sics-Informed Neural Networks in these contexts.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Recent advances in artificial intelligence\, particu
larly transformers and large language models\, are significantly enhancin
g genomic and biomedical research. In this talk\, first\, I will introduc
e Lamian\, a statistical framework that integrates Bayesian hierarchical
modeling with functional data analysis to model temporal gene expression
dynamics across multiple single-cell RNA-seq samples. Next\, I will discu
ss Methylformer\, a transformer-based deep learning model designed to pre
dict whole-genome DNA methylation landscape by combining gene expression
and DNA sequencing data. Finally\, I will highlight our recent work on le
veraging LLMs for cell type annotation and biomedical image classificatio
n\, as well as our efforts in developing a foundation model for epigeneti
cs data. These approaches demonstrate the growing potential of AI in adv
ancing our understanding of gene expression\, regulation\, and broader bi
omedical applications. \n\nBiography: Dr. Wenpin Hou is an Assistant Prof
essor in the Department of Biostatistics and an affiliated member of the
Data Science Institute at Columbia University. Her research integrates st
atistical machine learning with genomics\, focusing on single-cell genomi
cs\, epigenomics\, and spatial transcriptomics\, as well as the mathemati
cal modeling of gene regulatory networks. Dr. Hou is also pioneering the
application of artificial intelligence models in genomics. She has receiv
ed NIH Maximizing Investigators' Research Award (MIRA) for Early Stage In
vestigators (R35) in 2023 and the NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/
R00) in 2021. She earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics from The University of
Hong Kong and completed her postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins Unive
 rsity.\n\nZoom Link: https://duke.zoom.us/j/96972500007

DESCRIPTION:Early modern Europe and its colonial holdings ran on paper. It
was indispensable as a support for letters\, orders\, trials\, and recei
pts\, in addition to drawings and prints. Yet\, when backlit\, many paper
s reveal hidden content: watermarks\, which flicker in and out of legibil
ity. When considered seriously as emblems with iconographic and textual p
rograms\, watermarks transform the blank pages they are indivisible from
into images. And as images-often with religious components\, such as cros
ses or monstrances-they garnered the attention of individuals charged wit
h monitoring the proper usage of such symbols: the functionaries of the H
oly Office of the Inquisition. In this talk\, I will use the inquisitors'
debates on the merits of censoring papers with religious watermarks to r
eflect on the tensions and correspondences between ancient sacred symbols
and modern commodities in a global colonial system.\n\nAdam Jasienski re
ceived his PhD at Harvard University in 2016\, and serves as Associate Pr
ofessor of Art History at Southern Methodist University. His first book\,
Praying to Portraits: Audience\, Identity\, and the Inquisition\, was pu
blished by Penn State University Press in 2023 and was awarded the Ronald
  H. Bainton and Eleanor Tufts prizes.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joy Buolamwini is a poet of code who uses art and research
to illuminate the social implications of artificial intelligence. As an
MIT grad student\, Joy was working with facial analysis software when she
noticed a problem: the software didn't detect her face -- because the pe
ople who coded the algorithm hadn't taught it to identify a broad range o
f skin tones and facial structures. Now she is on a mission to make sure
AI works for all of us. It's an eye-opening talk about the need for accou
ntability in AI ... as algorithms take over more and more aspects of our
lives.Join us after the lecture for a reception and book signing.\n\nThis
lecture is part of the David M. Rubenstein Distinguished Lecture Series.
David M. Rubenstein is a Duke alumnus and former chair of Duke's Board o
f Trustees. The David M. Rubenstein Distinguished Lecture brings high-pro
file thought leaders and policymakers to campus each year. Event partners
for this lecture include the Sanford School of Public Policy\, Policy in
Living Color\, and Sanford's Cyber Policy Program.

DESCRIPTION:It's easy to feel pessimistic about the state of the world's h
ealth. The perfect storm of crises can seem intractable\, from the health
impacts of climate change to deadly wars and the constant risk of epidem
ics and pandemics. Yet despite these challenges\, Dr. Gavin Yamey\, prof
essor of global health and public policy at Duke\, is profoundly optimist
ic when it comes to tackling disease and improving human health worldwide
. He'll discuss why he thinks every nation could halve its premature deat

\, practice embodied work\, and experience profound community with plants

say that their most memorable memories at DCF are the conversations they
shared over a wheelbarrow of mulch or while tackling weeds in a bed of ca

DESCRIPTION:Susan Hyde (Berkeley) will present\, "Women's Group Empowermen
t Can Increase Political Participation: Evidence from Five Coordinated Fi
 eld Experiments." \n\nAbstract:\nNon-electoral political participation\,
such as attending local meetings\, contacting public officials\, and maki
ng demands for public funds\, is critical for leaders to effectively resp
ond to the needs of marginalized groups. Yet\, participation is unequal a
cross different groups in society\, with important consequences for distr
ibutional outcomes. This article presents a preregistered meta-analysis o
f five coordinated field experiments aimed at evaluating whether a popula
r theoretical model of collective action in social psychology can motivat
e women to engage more actively and effectively in non-electoral forms of
political participation. We show that the intervention increased partici
pation in a community grants program by an average of 13.7 points\, with
statistically significant and positive effects in four of five studies. W
e estimate that the treatment had demonstrable positive effects on the le
vel of participation\, the quality of participation\, and responsiveness
to women's policy goals in two of our five sites. Our analysis of mechani
sms shows that the effects on our main outcomes could have been mediated
by the mechanisms that directly follow from the women's empowerment inter
vention\, but could also have been mediated by complementary processes th
at resulted from the training programs\, such as self-efficacy\, politica
l knowledge\, social \, and shared policy priorities. We interpret this a
s evidence that this type of group empowerment intervention can increase
political participation by marginalized groups beyond common informationa
l treatments and encourage further research to better understand when it
is more likely to be effective.
