DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina Jewish Studies Seminar welcomes Andrea Gond
 os\, Stuart B. and Barbara Padnos Assistant Professor of Jewish Thought a
 t University of Michigan.  \n\nGondos' scholarship explores early modern 
 and medieval kabbalah in conversation with Jewish cultural and intellectu
 al history. She is particularly interested in how esoteric knowledge was 
 preserved\, transmitted\, and reimagined in the premodern period. Her rec
 ently published co-edited book\, Life of the Soul: Jewish Perspectives on
  Reincarnation from the Middle Ages to the Modern Period (SUNY\, 2024)\, 
 explores wide-ranging theories Jewish mystics and philosophers have offer
 ed on the concept of reincarnation. Earlier research analyzed the literar
 y characteristics of the medieval mystical classic\, the Sefer ha-Zohar (
 Book of Enlightenment)\, and its popularization among Jews and Christians
  in the age of print. Gondos' first monograph\, Kabbalah in Print: The St
 udy and Popularization of Jewish Mysticism in Early Modernity (SUNY\, 202
 0)\, examined how the technology of print influenced the popularization o
 f kabbalah in the early modern period paying special attention to the lit
 erary strategies and pedagogic objectives authors pursued. Her current bo
 ok project centers on the gendered aspects of healthcare and wellbeing in
  early modern Jewish recipe books of magic and practical Kabbalah. In thi
 s monograph\, she is particularly interested in uncovering the material a
 spects of Jewish magic by examining the types of healing strategies Jewis
 h male miracle workers (Ba'alei Shem) deployed for the management and tre
 atment of the female body and its reproductive functions.

DESCRIPTION:The verses of the Bible's Song of Songs have inspired composer
 s for centuries with their expressive poetry. In this concert\, Dr. Phili
 p Cave\, Duke Chapel's conductor-in-residence\, and the Evensong Singers 
 present settings of these texts from the fifteenth to the twenty-first ce
 ntury that show how changing musical idioms continue to renew our encount
 er with this ancient poetry.\n\nFree admission. Paid parking is available

 e address.\n\nUnique within the biblical canon\, the Song of Songs\, also
  called the Song of Solomon\, speaks of love and longing in language that

 mage of divine devotion. Renaissance composers often set these words with
 in balanced polyphony that invites contemplation and spiritual order\, wh
 ile modern composers tend to respond more directly to their immediacy and
  ambiguity. Come hear how words and music combine to express the passion 
 of this sacred poem.

DESCRIPTION:Quantifying neural health before irreversible decline occurs r
 emains one of the central challenges in neuroscience and medicine. Across
  epilepsy\, psychiatric illness\, neurodevelopmental disorders\, and neur
 odegeneration\, we lack a unifying physiological standard that defines wh
 at a "healthy brain" truly is - and how it begins to fail.\n\nIn this tal
 k\, I will introduce the Brain Entropy Index (BEI)\, a physics-grounded b
 iomarker built on two organizing principles of living neural systems: ent
 ropy maximization in spatial energy distributions and tight homeostatic r
 egulation of neural activity. In a healthy resting brain\, energy is broa
 dly and efficiently distributed across regions\, reflecting high entropy\
 , while remaining remarkably stable and tightly controlled.\n\nBEI operat
 ionalizes neural health through five measurable energetic properties: log
 normal energy distributions\, balanced regional allocation\, statistical 
 independence between regions\, low variance\, and temporal stability. I w
 ill present results from multimodal EEG\, fMRI\, and MEG datasets compris
 ing over 525 participants across neurological\, psychiatric\, neurodevelo
 pmental\, and neurodegenerative conditions. BEI not only differentiates h
 ealthy and clinical populations\, but scales with disease severity and ge
 neralizes across diagnostic categories and imaging modalities.\n\nThese f
 indings suggest the existence of a disease-agnostic\, modality-invariant 
 energetic signature of neural health. By reframing brain function through
  the lens of energetic organization\, BEI provides a quantitative foundat
 ion for early detection\, patient stratification\, and real-time monitori
 ng of therapeutic response.
