DESCRIPTION:Hugh Mangum was a self-taught photographer born in Durham in 1
877\, when it was a newly incorporated\, tobacco fueled boomtown. He was
an itinerant portraitist with a temporary studio\, working mostly in Nort
h Carolina and Virginia\, during the segregationist laws of the Jim Crow
era. Mangum had an open-door policy\, and his clients were racially and e
conomically diverse. And as art historian Deborah Willis writes\, his pho
tographs "show us lives marked both by notable affluence and hard work\,
all imbued with a strong sense of individuality\, self-creation and often
joy." After Mangum's death in 1922\, his glass plate negatives were stor
ed\, out of sight\, in a tobacco barn on his family farm for 50 years. \n
\n"Where We Find Ourselves: The Photographs of Hugh Mangum\, 1897-1922" i
s organized at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University by guest curat
ors Margaret Sartor\, independent curator and Duke instructor\, and Alex
Harris\, professor of the practice at Duke University\, in association wi
th Duke's Center for Documentary Studies.

DESCRIPTION:Palermo\, Sicily is often referred to as the "world's most con
quered city\," having been claimed by the Phoenicians (who called it Zyz)
 \, Greeks\, Carthaginians\, Romans\, Moors\, Normans\, and Spaniards amon
g others over 3\,000 years. In the last ten years\, it has been undergoin
g a process of "revitalization\," in which buildings are being renovated\
, the city center cleaned up\, and public squares rebuilt. Millions of to
urists come to Palermo's centro storico each year to see what UNESCO has
designated part of World Heritage. But tourists are not the only traveler
s to Palermo\, and the mixture of people and culture is as much a part of
its present as its past.\n\nIn Zyz\, Felicity Palma examines some of the
tensions that make Palermo what it is. Through film photography and shor
t video work captured in and around Palermo's centro storico\, Palma invi
tes viewers to see this place from multiple points of view. Focusing on t
he interplay of the famed old city and the many people who populate it no
w\, her work offers viewers a space to examine the boundaries between his
torical and current\, migrant and tourist\, us and them.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit runs until March 29\, 2019\, and it is part of th
e Visualizing Afghanistan program that took place at Duke University on F
eb 13-15\, 2019. \n\nHours of the exhibit are from 9AM-5PM\, Monday thr
u Friday. Closed on weekends. \n\nVisualizing Afghanistan marks the forti
eth anniversary of the Soviet invasion as well as the eighteenth year of
the longest war ever waged by the United States. An exhibit of political
posters from the Soviet-Afghan War (1979-89) reveals regional contestatio
ns among socialism\, nationalism and Islamic insurgency at the end of the
Cold War. The rise of the Mujahideen set the foundation for the establis
hment of Al-Qaeda and the subsequent US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 20
 01. In conjunction with the exhibit\, a series of talks and panels will e
xamine the Soviet and US occupations and their lasting cultural and geopo
litical legacies.\n\nVisitor parking is available at several locations ne
ar the Franklin Center\, particularly paid weekday parking in the Medical
Center Parking Garage II on the same block (enter from Elba Street). \n\
nOrganized by Duke Middle East Studies Center with support from the Josia
h Charles Trent Memorial Foundation Endowment Fund\, Duke University for
International and Global Studies\, and AMES Presents.\n\nFor more informa

DESCRIPTION:Please join the Franklin Humanities Institute for two talks by
Iain Chambers and Lidia Curti of the University of Naples L'Orientale.\n
\n11am \n\nIain Chambers\, "Mediterranean blues: thinking with the diver"
\n\nIn this talk\, organised around the famous painting of the diver in t
he Paestum archaeological museum\, I propose a cutting up of time and the
reassembling of its elements in the urgency of a contemporary constellat
ion. This permits the tearing and perforation of the maps authorised by a
ccredited disciplines and their framing and explanation: from geography a
nd anthropology to history and sociology. Here the prospects of other lan
guages\, both musical and visual\, enforce the critical imperative of the
anachronism that subtracts the Mediterranean from a reductive objectivit
y in order to think with the unfolding possibilities of an altogether mor
 e fluid archive.\n\n12:30pm Lunch\n\n1pm \n\nLidia Curti\,"Diasporic fema
le narratives: crossing the Mediterranean\, rewriting Italy"\n\nThrough l
istening to the literary and artistic narratives arriving from the southe
rn shores of the Mediterranean\, this paper considers the return of Europ
ean colonialism\, particularly Italian\, in the ongoing cultural (and pol
itical) constitution of the present. Here a singular understanding of Eur
opean modernity falls away in the multiple complexity sustained by female
bodies in their movement through language\, senses and belonging\, and t
 heir insistence to exist.\n\n2:30pm Coffee\, tea\, cake

DESCRIPTION:Objects constitute the fundamental currency of the brain: they
are things that we perceive\, remember\, and think about. One of the mos
t important objects for a primate is a face. Research on the macaque face
patch system in recent years has given us a remarkable window into the d
etailed processes underlying object recognition. Dr. Tsao will discuss re
cent findings from her lab elucidating the code for face and object ident
ity in the temporal lobe\, and how this code is used by downstream areas.
Finally\, she will discuss the general problem of how the brain builds a
model of the world\, and how we are leveraging our access to a hierarchi
cal network for encoding object identity to gain new insight into this pr
 oblem.

DESCRIPTION:The circulation system is a critical physiological process of
the human body that maintains homeostasis by balancing biological paramet
ers by the delivery and removal of nutrients/waste and fighting off invad
ing pathogens. Through the advancement of microfluidics technologies\, w
e have enabled the automation of biological fluids delivery through physi
ological vasculature networks that mimic the physiological circulation of
the human body. The critical bottleneck is to engineer the microenviron
ment for the formation of 3D tissues and organs and to also pump and perf
use the tissue vascular network for on-chip microcirculation. \n\nAbraham
(Abe) P. Lee is the William J. Link Professor and Chair of the Biomedica
l Engineering (BME) Department with a courtesy appointment in Mechanical
and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at the University of California\, Irvine.
He is the Director of the NSF I/UCRC "Center for Advanced Design & Manu
facturing of Integrated Microfluidics" (CADMIM). Prior to UCI\, he was at
the National Cancer Institute and a program manager in the Microsystems
Technology Office at DARPA (1999-2001). Dr. Lee's lab focuses on develop
ing active integrated microfluidics and droplet microfluidic platforms.

DESCRIPTION:The wrinkling of thin elastic sheets is very familiar: our ski
 n wrinkles\, drapes have coarsening folds\, and a sheet stretched over a
round surface must wrinkle or fold. \n\nWhat kind of mathematics is relev
ant? The stable configurations of a sheet are local minima of a variation
al problem with a rather special structure\, involving a nonconvex membra
ne term (which favors isometry) and a higher-order bending term (which pe
nalizes curvature). The bending term is a singular perturbation\; its sma
ll coefficient is the sheet thickness squared. The patterns seen in thin
sheets arise from energy minimization -- but not in the same way that min
imal surfaces arise from area minimization. Rather\, the analysis of wrin
kling is an example of "energy-driven pattern formation\," in which our g
oal is to understand the asymptotic character of the minimizers in a suit
able limit (as the nondimensionalized sheet thickness tends to zero). \n\

DESCRIPTION:Development of accessible strategies for efficient detection o
f nucleic acid biomarkers is a major unmet need for applications ranging
from cancer screening to agricultural biotechnology and biofuel developme
nt. Esophageal cancer (EC) remains a particularly deadly and devastating
disease with a five-year survival of 17% in the US. The current screening
and surveillance strategy for EC only focuses on performing endoscopy in
patients with clinical risk factors associated with esophageal adenocarc
inoma (EAC)\, yet this strategy has failed to reverse the increasing inci
dence of EC. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have great promise as a new important cla
ss of biomarkers for early detection of various cancers\; however\, these
small molecules have not been adopted into early diagnostics for clinica
l practice because of challenges adapting complex laboratory techniques i
nto accessible clinical tests. Several miRNAs have been identified to be
associated with EAC and Barrett's esophagus (BE)\, the premalignant metap
lasia associated with EAC\, distinguishing malignant and pre-malignant sa
mples from squamous mucosa. In a blinded study\, the surface-enhanced Ram
 an scattering (SERS)-based plasmonics-active nanoprobes described herein\
, referred to as inverse molecular sentinels (iMS)\, demonstrated diagnos
tic accuracy for in vitro identification of endoscopic biopsy samples as
tumor\, Barrett's esophagus or normal tissue via miRNA detection. The iMS
nanoprobe technology can be designed to detect a wide range

DESCRIPTION:Changes in behavioral state are associated with modulation of
sensory processing in mice. Recent studies have shown that locomotor acti
vity and arousal influence both spontaneous activity and sensory-evoked r
esponses across mouse sensory cortices\, with important consequences for
sensory perception. To what extent behavioral state modulation generalize
s to other brain functions\, however\, remains unclear. \n\nIn this talk
she will present our work showing that behavioral state modulates perform
ance in delay eyeblink conditioning\, a cerebellum-dependent form of Pavl
ovian conditioning. they find that locomotor activity improves associativ
e learning through mechanisms that are dissociable from arousal and indep
endent of the modulation of cortical sensory responses. Further\, optogen
etic circuit dissection suggests that locomotion modulates delay eyeblink
conditioning through mechanisms acting on the mossy fiber pathway within
the cerebellum.\n\nFinally\, she will show that controlling locomotor ac
tivity rescues the impaired eyeblink conditioning of cannabinoid receptor
knockout mice\, highlighting the importance of considering general chang
es in behavioral state as a powerful means through which individual genes
  contribute to complex behaviors.
