DESCRIPTION:On display in the John Hope Franklin Center Gallery are drawin
g interventions by Renzo Ortega on Llanchama (or Yanchama). Llanchama is
a natural textile used by multiple indigenous communities of the Amazon.
Because of its origin\, it does not need to be waived\, it is considered
a "Gift" from mother nature\, and also a way to teach how to make textil
es in situated contexts. It is widely used in the production of material
culture. It comes directly from the great sapucaia inner bark (Lecythis P
isonis)\, that peels naturally due to its rapid growth in the forest. Lla
nchama is used as material for ritual garments\, blankets\, diapers (for
babies)\, baskets\, sifters\, nets\, etc.\n\nOrtega argues about this ser
ies of drawing Interventions on llanchama\, "The Patrimony series respond
s to the global evil of heritage destruction\, the physical destruction o
f objects from the past\, and the conceptual destruction of people's thou
ghts and cultural contributions in the present. These drawings are an act
of shaping and destroying. A sudden change is generated not by the weath
er or the erosion\; humanity is the one who killed history. Beyond the fo
rmal elements of drawing\, the physical process of these works creates an
imprint that resists and adapts to intentional manipulation. With these
works\, I create resistant traces\, physically and thoughtfully\, to foll
ow through on the projected path."\n\nThe exhibit will be open to January
16\, 2023 through May 18\, 2023.

DESCRIPTION:Stan Allen\, in the spring of 1999\, asked me if I would be in
terested in attending a Pow Wow with him. I did attend\, and when I saw a
nd heard North Carolina Native Americans\, in full regalia\, making their
grand entry into the ceremonial circle I knew I would record that experi
ence in paint. I attended numerous Pow Wows with Stan\, and each time bec
ame more committed to creating this collection. The work in this exhibit
is inspired by native American regalia and dance\, which in good measure
are reborn from history\, myth and legend. Candid sketches\, photographs\
, and memories of the Pow Wows of the Haliwa-Saponi\, Lumbee\, Waccamaw-S
iouan\, and Occaneechi-Saponi tribes provide the visual references in cre
ating this body of work. These paintings document the resurgence of triba
l identity by the indigenous peoples of eastern North Carolina. For me\,
they whisper the simple yet profound message that\, though Native America
ns have endured some of the worst that history could mete out\, they have
emerged as vibrant and beautiful as ever. \n\nThey are here...STILL

DESCRIPTION:Scholarly journals evolved in a print world where they had to
be selective and do a lot of review and filtering up front\, because of p
hysical limitations on how much they could publish and distribute. In a d
igital world\, these constraints are no longer necessary\, opening up spa
ce for innovation and improvements. Nowhere is this clearer than in the r
ecent growth of preprints\, where authors take control of when to share t
heir work. But in a world where preprints are commonplace\, what is the r
ole of the journal? eLife\, a not-for-profit\, peer-reviewed\, open acces
s scientific journal for the biomedical and life sciences\, has been expl
oring this question\, and recently announced new changes to its model to
focus on detailed preprint assessment instead of binary accept/reject dec
isions. This lead to a great deal of discussion in the community about ho
w journals could or should work\, and the pros and cons of this kind of m
odel for researchers\, research assessment\, and science more broadly. Da
mian Pattinson\, Executive Director of eLife\, will be in Durham on Monda
y March 20\, and will join members of the Duke community to explain the n
ew eLife model\, what it aims to do\, and to engage us in conversation ab
out it. Come with your questions and ideas\, and learn more about a poten
tial new model for scholarly journal publishing.\n\nThis event will be he
ld in The Edge Workshop Room (Room 127) on the first floor of Bostock Lib
rary on Duke's West Campus. It is open to members of the Duke community a
nd anyone interested in this topic.\n\nThis will be an in-person event. M
asking is encouraged.

DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\nThe data in electronic health records (EHRs) have im
mense potential to transform medicine both at the point-of-care and throu
gh retrospective research. However\, structured data alone can only tell
a fraction of patients' clinical narratives\, as many clinically importan
t variables are trapped within clinical notes. Automated extraction is di
fficult since clinical notes are written in their own jargon-heavy dialec
t\, patient histories can contain hundreds of notes\, and there is often
minimal labeled data available. In this talk\, I will discuss scalable na
tural language processing (NLP) solutions to overcome these technical bar
riers that arise both in medicine and beyond. These include the developme
nt of label-efficient modeling methodology and novel techniques for lever
aging large language models. I will also describe a new paradigm for EHR
documentation that incentivizes the creation of high-quality data at the
point-of-care. I will end by discussing future challenges and opportuniti
es in NLP that could impact a variety of healthcare workflows.\n\nSPEAKER

DESCRIPTION:My talk examines one of the most popular Japanese publications
of the twentieth century\, Ōkubo Yasuo's translation of Gone with the Wi
nd (Eng. 1936\, trans. 1938). I argue that the translation itself and it
s publicity campaign tapped into popular representations of the Meiji Res
toration\, particularly portraits of the infamous Shinsengumi. This conne
ction enables the text to perform several ideological functions in the co
ntext of wartime Japan. \n\nFirst\, Mitchell's hostile portrait of the Y
ankee North provides a convenient vehicle for criticism of US aggression\
, hypocrisy\, and soulless materialism. Second\, her attribution of time
less beauty and inborn morality to Southern culture offers a touchstone f
or contemplation of alternative civilizational models that contrast with
the conventional formulation of US-style modernity. Third\, Scarlett's op
portunistic adoption of Yankee values thematizes for Japanese readers a v
iew of modernity that addresses the contradictions and uncomfortable trut
hs in Japan's relationship with the West. And finally\, the unrepentant
racism of Mitchell's depiction of slavery and blackness exposes the fraug
ht racial politics of the Japanese imperial project. Fittingly\, these c
ross-cultural issues of singularity\, commensurability\, and antagonism a
re worked out in the realm of translation.

DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\nThe proliferation of inexpensive high-quality camera
s coupled with recent advances in machine learning and computer vision ha
ve enabled new applications on video data. This in turn has renewed inter
est in video data management systems (VDMSs).\n\nIn this talk\, we explor
e how to build a modern data management system for video data. We focus\,
in particular\, on the storage manager and present several techniques to
store video data in a way that accelerates queries over that data. We th
en move up the stack and discuss different types of data models that can
be exposed to applications. Finally\, we discuss how it's possible to sup

DESCRIPTION:Moving from the nineteenth century to the present\, this groun
dbreaking book explores\, without denial or equivocation\, the politics o
f pluralism during the Ottoman Empire and in the post-Ottoman Arab world.
Rather than judging the Arab world as a place of age-old sectarian animo
sities\, Age of Coexistence describes the forging of a complex system of
coexistence\, what Makdisi calls the "ecumenical frame." He argues that n
ew forms of antisectarian politics\, and some of the most important examp
les of Muslim-Christian political collaboration\, crystallized to make an
d define the modern Arab world.\n\nDr. Ussama Makdisi is Professor of His
tory and Chancellor's Chair at the University of California Berkeley. He
was previously Professor of History and the first holder of the Arab-Amer
ican Educational Foundation Chair of Arab Studies at Rice University in H
ouston. During AY 2019-2020\, Professor Makdisi was a Visiting Professor
at the University of California at Berkeley in the Department of History
. In 2012-2013\, Makdisi was an invited Resident Fellow at the Wissenscha
ftskolleg zu Berlin (Institute for Advanced Study\, Berlin). In April 20
09\, the Carnegie Corporation named Makdisi a 2009 Carnegie Scholar as pa
rt of its effort to promote original scholarship regarding Muslim societi
es and communities\, both in the United States and abroad. Makdisi was a
warded the Berlin Prize and spent the Spring 2018 semester as a Fellow at
the American Academy of Berlin.\n\nProfessor Makdisi's most recent book
Age of Coexistence: The Ecumenical Frame and the Making of the Modern Ara
b World was published in 2019 by the University of California Press. He i
s also the author of Faith Misplaced: the Broken Promise of U.S.-Arab Rel

the 2008 Albert Hourani Book Award from the Middle East Studies Associat

DESCRIPTION:The intent of the series is to intercalate with the Div. of TB
S JC and data clubs on alternating fortnights to facilitate a steady stre
am of critically evaluated research being presented in the department. \n
\nThe format is going to be 2 x 30' talks in which clinical and basic res
earch is presented in its rawest form i.e.\, no polished stories but ongo
ing research that's presented to garner critical feedback\, suggestions\,
and opportunities to collaborate. It will be a great opportunity to road
test talks for meetings or for trainees to get over their 'yips' before
presenting to a more formal group.\n\nThe talks will be in person on the
third Monday of every month from 5:30-6:30pm with Bryan 301 - accessible
to basic scientists and clinicians alike. We will have pizza and soda as
an enticement for the trainees to come.

DESCRIPTION:The phenomenon of wall-bounded turbulent flow critically affec
ts the performance of many engineering transportation systems. For exampl
e\, the turbulent drag force acting on the ocean liners accounts for more
than 80% of the total energy expenditure. As such\, understanding the fu
ndamental wall-bounded turbulent flow and achieving turbulent drag reduct
ion have been a long-time pursuit for both scientists and engineers. Over
the past several decades\, although many promising drag reduction techni
ques have been developed (e.g.\, by employing a passive super-hydrophobic
surface)\, sustainable drag reduction remains a fundamental challenge. I
n this talk\, I will present a novel dynamic free-slip surface method tha
t can reduce the turbulent drag force by more than 40%. This method emplo
ys an array of air-water interfaces that are attached to the wall boundar
y\, and dynamically oscillates the free-slip interfaces at the desired fr
equency and amplitude. The dynamic free-slip surfaces substantially modif
y the momentum and energy transfer processes within the turbulent flow. T
he turbulent vorticity and shear motions were effectively lifted away fro
m the wall boundary and a counterintuitive local propulsion force (rather
than drag force) was generated. In addition\, as shown by an analysis of
the energy exchange process\, the turbulent flow in the regions close to
the wall boundary partially re-laminarized through an inversed energy ca
scade process. These physical observations all support the existence of a
strong drag reduction effect.

DESCRIPTION:LUNCH: \nLunch will be served at 11:45 am. \n\nABSTRACT: \nHow
do we build ML that works well for everyone? In recent years\, ML has in
creasingly shifted from precise\, well-defined tasks to diverse use cases
. This presents new challenges for how to understand where these systems
work well or don't\, and how to improve them. In this talk\, I will dive
deep into how we've made progress in addressing these challenges in recom
mender systems. First\, I'll discuss progress in measuring and improving
ML Fairness in recommender systems\, across diverse users and item provid
ers. Second\, I'll discuss research on leveraging reinforcement learning
for all users to have positive\, long-term experiences. Last\, building o
n our understanding from recommenders\, I'll discuss how such challenges
of robust performance arise in language models\, and the challenges and o
pportunities in this area. \n\nSPEAKER BIO: \nAlex Beutel is a Senior Sta
ff Research Scientist and team lead in Google Research\, driving research
spanning recommender systems\, fairness\, robustness\, safety\, reinforc
ement learning\, and ML for databases. He received his Ph.D. in 2016 from
Carnegie Mellon University's Computer Science Department\, and previousl
y received his B.S. from Duke University in computer science and physics.
His Ph.D. thesis on large-scale user behavior modeling\, covering recomm
ender systems\, fraud detection\, and scalable machine learning\, was giv
en the SIGKDD 2017 Doctoral Dissertation Award Runner-Up. He received the
Best Paper Award at KDD 2016 and ACM GIS 2010\, was a finalist for best
paper in KDD 2014\, and was awarded the Facebook Fellowship in 2013 and t
he NSF Graduate Research Fellowship in 2011. More details can be found at
