DESCRIPTION:On display in the John Hope Franklin Center Gallery are drawin
g interventions by Renzo Ortega on Llanchama (or Yanchama). Llanchama is
a natural textile used by multiple indigenous communities of the Amazon.
Because of its origin\, it does not need to be waived\, it is considered
a "Gift" from mother nature\, and also a way to teach how to make textil
es in situated contexts. It is widely used in the production of material
culture. It comes directly from the great sapucaia inner bark (Lecythis P
isonis)\, that peels naturally due to its rapid growth in the forest. Lla
nchama is used as material for ritual garments\, blankets\, diapers (for
 babies)\, baskets\, sifters\, nets\, etc.\n\nOrtega argues about this ser
ies of drawing Interventions on llanchama\, "The Patrimony series respond
s to the global evil of heritage destruction\, the physical destruction o
f objects from the past\, and the conceptual destruction of people's thou
ghts and cultural contributions in the present. These drawings are an act
of shaping and destroying. A sudden change is generated not by the weath
er or the erosion\; humanity is the one who killed history. Beyond the fo
rmal elements of drawing\, the physical process of these works creates an
imprint that resists and adapts to intentional manipulation. With these
works\, I create resistant traces\, physically and thoughtfully\, to foll
ow through on the projected path."\n\nThe exhibit will be open to January
  16\, 2023 through May 18\, 2023.

DESCRIPTION:Stan Allen\, in the spring of 1999\, asked me if I would be in
terested in attending a Pow Wow with him. I did attend\, and when I saw a
nd heard North Carolina Native Americans\, in full regalia\, making their
grand entry into the ceremonial circle I knew I would record that experi
ence in paint. I attended numerous Pow Wows with Stan\, and each time bec
ame more committed to creating this collection. The work in this exhibit
is inspired by native American regalia and dance\, which in good measure
are reborn from history\, myth and legend. Candid sketches\, photographs\
, and memories of the Pow Wows of the Haliwa-Saponi\, Lumbee\, Waccamaw-S
iouan\, and Occaneechi-Saponi tribes provide the visual references in cre
ating this body of work. These paintings document the resurgence of triba
l identity by the indigenous peoples of eastern North Carolina. For me\,
they whisper the simple yet profound message that\, though Native America
ns have endured some of the worst that history could mete out\, they have
emerged as vibrant and beautiful as ever. \n\nThey are here...STILL

DESCRIPTION:NeMLA's 54th Convention Niagara Falls\, NY\nMarch 23-26\, 2023
 \n\nAbstract deadline: September 30\, 2022\n\nTo submit abstracts\, click
  here:\nhttps://www.buffalo.edu/nemla/convention/session.html\nThen click
on "Go to our CFP to submit an Abstract" and search for "ordinary".\n\nA
bstract\n\nHow can ordinary language philosophy's (OLP) picture of langua
ge as a shared form of life foster resilience? For OLP\, language is a pe
culiarly stable and resilient reservoir of meaning which we share. Speake
rs agree in language\, in form(s) of life\, and\, "queer as it may sound\
," Wittgenstein writes\, in judgments. For Sandra Laugier\, this is not i
ntersubjective agreement but rather "as objective an agreement as possibl
e." When we are beset by pain\, trauma\, or skepticism\, we can resilient
ly recover from this alienation of the self by recalling the shape of our
lives in language. However\, OLP insists that our agreements are not pre
-given: language cannot be ours unless we are capable of repudiating\, lo
sing\, and projecting it into new contexts for others to receive. Resilie
nce\, then\, may be found not only in the recalling of long-familiar mean
ings but also in the risking of new ones. Furthermore\, in its persistent
invocation of a "we\," OLP advances a dialogic view of language: we cons
tantly appeal to one another by our words in the hope that we can - and w
ant to - find ourselves in each other's utterances. We are bound up with
and responsible to one another. Stanley Cavell recognizes "language as ev
 erywhere revealing desire\," especially in a cry\, silence\, or sob\, and
as demanding something that is owed - an acknowledgement\, a response. C
an Cavellian acknowledgement\, even of voicelessness\, enable us to move
through trauma and tragedy rather than remain frozen? What does Wittgenst
ein's constant seeking and revealing of community in language teach us ab
out the human and resilience? How does OLP help us to understand forms an
d acts of resilience in literature\, film\, and culture? Presenters might
consider the role of the following: claims\, criteria\, form(s) of life\
 , agreement\, aspect-seeing\, recognition\, contestation\, acknowledgemen
 t\, passionate utterance\, voice.\n\nChairs\n\nNicole Ferrari (University
of Pennsylvania) - nferrari92@gmail.com Marcus Dominick (University of P

DESCRIPTION:Please join the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute for a
lecture by Susheila Nasta. \n\n"The Bloomsbury Indians" \n\nThe place whe
re its famous bohemian artists 'lived in squares but loved in triangles'\
, 'Bloomsbury' is frequently represented as a buzzing\, dynamic space: cr
ucible for the evolution of Euro-American modernism. It is less well kno
wn that in the early years of the twentieth century when Britain was at t
he height of empire\, the area was increasingly inhabited by colonials lu
red by its reputation for free-thinking\, experimentation and dissent. Th
ese included numerous Indian students and political radicals whose passag
es from India to Britain had drawn them to the many universities and lodg
ing houses criss-crossing this cosmopolitan hub. \n\nExtending the param
eters of orthodox cultural histories\, this talk foregrounds the signifi
cant\, but hitherto obscured\, artistic networks and groupings of South A
sian writers\, publishers\, broadcasters and activists who lived and work
ed in Bloomsbury in the period following World War 1 and the lead up to I
ndependence\, Partition and the decline of empire. Though recent scholars
hip has drawn attention to convergences between empire and modernism\, it
has rarely focussed on Britain's empire within\, on material histories\,
local specificities of time and place\, on artistic networks and encount
ers\, or the formation of cross-cultural relationships by those who gener
ated such exchanges. Offering a more diverse vista on Bloomsbury\, the le
cture will expose the often-hidden contours of a differently inflected mo
dernity\, situated both within and outside the European body. \n\nDrawing
on current work for a collective biography\, The Bloomsbury Indians form
s part of a wider and lifelong cultural project to change the angle of vi
sion and highlight how Black and Asian writing has long been integral to
the formation of British literary culture. \n\nDr Susheila Nasta MBE F
RSL is a writer\, presenter\, literary activist and Professor Emerita at
Queen Mary College\, University of London. In 1984 she founded Wasafiri\
, the Magazine of International Contemporary Writing\, one of the first m
agazines to platform literary voices from Britain's Black British\, South
Asian\, and diasporic communities. As Editor-in-Chief for over three and
a half decades\, she published 100 issues featuring more than 5000 inter
 national writers.\n\nRSVP at https://duke.is/zedvx

DESCRIPTION:LUNCH\nLunch served at 11:45 am.\n\nABSTRACT\nNot all convex f
unctions have finite minimizers\; some can only be minimized by a sequenc
e as it heads to infinity. In this work\, we aim to develop a theory for
understanding such minimizers at infinity. We study astral space\, a comp
act extension of Euclidean space to which such points at infinity have be
en added. Astral space is constructed to be as small as possible while st
ill ensuring that all linear functions can be continuously extended to th
e new space. Although not a vector space\, nor even a metric space\, astr
al space is nevertheless so well-structured as to allow useful and meanin
gful extensions of such concepts as convexity\, conjugacy\, and subdiffer
entials. We develop these concepts and analyze various properties of conv
ex functions on astral space\, including the detailed structure of their
minimizers\, exact characterizations of continuity\, and convergence of d
escent algorithms.\n\nThis is joint work with Miroslav Dudík and Matus Te
lgarsky.\n\nSPEAKER BIO\nRobert Schapire is a Partner Researcher at Micro
soft Research in New York City\, and his main research interest is in the
oretical and applied machine learning. He received his PhD from MIT\, and
had a brief postdoc at Harvard. He subsequently joined the technical sta
ff at AT&T Labs (formerly AT&T Bell Laboratories) and then became a Profe
ssor of Computer Science at Princeton. He won the 2003 Gödel Prize\, the
2004 Kanelakkis Theory and Practice Award\, and is a fellow of the AAAI a
nd a member of both the National Academy of Engineering and the National
 Academy of Sciences.

DESCRIPTION:My research seeks to develop an understanding of human communi
cation. I am interested in how listeners interpret a talker's intentions\
, thoughts\, and feelings\, using both linguistic and non-linguistic aspe
cts of spoken language. Speech is a highly complex signal. Speakers conve
y information intentionally with the syllables\, words\, and sentences th
at they utter. In addition\, however\, an enormous amount of information
is conveyed through a speaker's individual vocal characteristics and styl
 e. Spoken language requires that the listener integrate what is being sai
d with how it is being said. Understanding the interplay between the perc
eption of the words and sentences of spoken language with the processing
of non-linguistic properties of speech is essential for a complete accoun
t of spoken communication.\n\nA fundamental assumption regarding spoken l
anguage is that the relationship between the sound structure of spoken wo
rds and semantic or conceptual meaning is arbitrary. Although exceptions
to this arbitrariness assumption have been reported (e.g.\, onomatopoeia
)\, these instances are thought to be special cases\, with little relevan
ce to spoken language and reference more generally. In this talk\, I wil
l review a series of findings that suggest that not only do non-arbitrary
mappings between sound and meaning exist in spoken language\, but that l
isteners are sensitive to these correspondences cross-linguistically and
that non-arbitrary mappings have functional significance for language pro
cessing and word learning. These findings suggest a general sensitivity
to cross-modal perceptual similarities may underlie the ability to match
word to meaning in spoken language.

ual multi-armed bandits are a popular framework for learning to make good
decisions under uncertainty\, and are applicable to areas ranging from a
d placement to optimizing flu shot reminders. The majority of work in thi
s space assumes the goal is to learn a decision policy to map from contex
ts to decisions in a way that maximizes the cumulative sum of outcomes of
interest\, such as total clicks or flu shot appointments. However\, in m
any real world settings there are multiple objectives of interest: for in
stance\, a stakeholder may have a limited budget\, care about fairness to
subpopulations\, or may wish to balance the experience for those partici
pating in a study with the generalizable knowledge that might be learned
and of use for other situations. In this talk I'll discuss some of our wo
rk on learning to make decisions under uncertainty given multiple objecti
ves of interest\, and highlight motivating settings in education\, health
care and public policy. \n \nSPEAKER BIO\nEmma Brunskill is an associate
professor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University wher
e she and Brunskill's lab aim to create AI systems that learn from few sa
mples to robustly make good decisions. Their work spans algorithmic and t

ve impact AI might have in education and healthcare. Brunskill's lab is p

\n\nQuantum computing has the potential to develop as an experimental and
computational platform for physics\, chemistry\, materials science\, and
biology. Considerable progress has been made in hardware\, software and
algorithms that allow us to probe many-body systems with quantum computer
s\, and make scientific discovery a reality. In this talk\, I will discus
s some of the recent developments in quantum computing algorithms to simu
late the complex many-body systems common in physical sciences. To obtain
reliable results from NISQ quantum computers\, error mitigation\, and re
duction of computational complexity are essential. I will highlight some
of our efforts to enable reliable simulations on quantum hardware.
