DESCRIPTION:On display in the John Hope Franklin Center Gallery are drawin
g interventions by Renzo Ortega on Llanchama (or Yanchama). Llanchama is
a natural textile used by multiple indigenous communities of the Amazon.
Because of its origin\, it does not need to be waived\, it is considered
a "Gift" from mother nature\, and also a way to teach how to make textil
es in situated contexts. It is widely used in the production of material
culture. It comes directly from the great sapucaia inner bark (Lecythis P
isonis)\, that peels naturally due to its rapid growth in the forest. Lla
nchama is used as material for ritual garments\, blankets\, diapers (for
 babies)\, baskets\, sifters\, nets\, etc.\n\nOrtega argues about this ser
ies of drawing Interventions on llanchama\, "The Patrimony series respond
s to the global evil of heritage destruction\, the physical destruction o
f objects from the past\, and the conceptual destruction of people's thou
ghts and cultural contributions in the present. These drawings are an act
of shaping and destroying. A sudden change is generated not by the weath
er or the erosion\; humanity is the one who killed history. Beyond the fo
rmal elements of drawing\, the physical process of these works creates an
imprint that resists and adapts to intentional manipulation. With these
works\, I create resistant traces\, physically and thoughtfully\, to foll
ow through on the projected path."\n\nThe exhibit will be open to January
  16\, 2023 through May 18\, 2023.

DESCRIPTION:Stan Allen\, in the spring of 1999\, asked me if I would be in
terested in attending a Pow Wow with him. I did attend\, and when I saw a
nd heard North Carolina Native Americans\, in full regalia\, making their
grand entry into the ceremonial circle I knew I would record that experi
ence in paint. I attended numerous Pow Wows with Stan\, and each time bec
ame more committed to creating this collection. The work in this exhibit
is inspired by native American regalia and dance\, which in good measure
are reborn from history\, myth and legend. Candid sketches\, photographs\
, and memories of the Pow Wows of the Haliwa-Saponi\, Lumbee\, Waccamaw-S
iouan\, and Occaneechi-Saponi tribes provide the visual references in cre
ating this body of work. These paintings document the resurgence of triba
l identity by the indigenous peoples of eastern North Carolina. For me\,
they whisper the simple yet profound message that\, though Native America
ns have endured some of the worst that history could mete out\, they have
emerged as vibrant and beautiful as ever. \n\nThey are here...STILL

DESCRIPTION:The Duke Chapel Evensong Singers\, directed by the Chapel's Dr
. Philip Cave\, present a concert of three masterful contemporary composi
tions for choir and organ with themes of sacrifice and offering.\n\nAdmis
sion is free. Parking is available on a first-come-first-served basis in
the Bryan Center garage at 125 Science Drive. ADA parking is available in
the Bryan Center Surface Lot at the same address.\n\nGerald Finzi's anth
em Lo\, the full\, final sacrifice is one of the finest works in the Engl
ish choral tradition\, from the pen of a twentieth-century British compos
er whose sensitivity to poetry is legend. For this piece\, Finzi sets to
music two seventeenth-century poems by Richard Crashaw that celebrate the
gift of the Eucharist.\n\nThe Estonian composer Arvo Pärt's Salve Regina
was composed in 2001 and\, as in many of his sacred choral works\, he ac
hieves great effect from quite minimal gestures. The music in this settin
g of the traditional Latin hymn to the Virgin Mary develops from a unison
choral song into 8-voice polyphony. The rhythm of the Marian text has a
direct influence on the sober 3/4 meter of the composition.\n\nThe twenti
eth-century composer and pianist Kenneth Leighton's cantata Crucifixus pr
o nobis sets to music words by the seventeenth-century poets Patrick Care
y and Phineas Fletcher. Composed for tenor solo\, seven-part choir\, and
organ\, it dates from 1961 and includes some severe and dissonant writing
-ending with a sublime setting of Fletcher's poem "Drop\, drop slow tears
." Tenor soloist Anighya Crocker performs with the choir.

DESCRIPTION:Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Dissertation Defense\n\nAbstr
act:\nStudies of human health have recently expanded to focus on the expo
some paradigm\, encompassing all exposures humans encounter from concepti
on onward. However\, source\, measurement\, and volume intricacies inhere
nt to these data have constrained progression of statistical methods for
key research questions. The central theme of this work is to develop and
test statistical methodologies that can address the challenges of the com
plex relationships between environmental exposures\, socioeconomic distre
ss\, and health outcomes. In this work\, we explore three approaches to c
haracterizing community health and its potential impact on several types
of disease outcomes. In the first approach\, we implement a latent class
model to socioeconomic and comorbidities data and explore these classific
ations as fixed effects in an ecological spatial model of COVID-19 cases
and deaths in NYC during two time periods of the pandemic. In the second\
, we use a non-parametric Bayesian approach to form socio-economic and po
llution cluster profiles across US counties. We then use these profiles t
o inform a Bayesian spatial model on breast cancer mortality for data fro
m 2014. In the final approach\, we utilize a latent network model traditi
onally used in psychometrics research to explore structural racism. Using
information from five domains previously used to measure discrimination
 (employment\, education\, housing\, health\, and criminal justice)\, we i
dentify new variable domains to illustrate the complex manifestations of
structural racism at the census tract level in Pennsylvania.\n\nZoom Conf

DESCRIPTION:Please join the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute for a
lecture by Premesh Lalu!\n\nUndoing Apartheid: \n \nAccounts of apartheid
in South Africa often neglect the persistence of a political rationality
of race that took shape in the idea of petty apartheid. Instituted as a
technique of ordering everyday life towards the requirements of a society
of control in South Africa\, petty apartheid reveals what is often obscu
red in critiques of apartheid. Cohering around discourses of the sensory
order and vitalism\, the virulent and intractable strand of petty aparthe
id might yet teach us something hitherto repressed to describe the relati
onship between race and modernity. Taking my cue from a recently publishe
d book titled Undoing Apartheid\, this lecture explores how we apprehend
this minor but enduring problem of racial formation in South Africa. More
importantly\, I ask whether an aesthetic education offers the only hope
to deal with what is repeated in apartheid and help us steer to a further
shore of post-apartheid freedom.\n\nProfessor Premesh Lalu is a Research
Professor and former director of the Centre for Humanities Research (CHR
) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC)\, South Africa. He complet
ed a doctoral study titled "In the Event of History" with the support of
a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in the ICGC at the University of Minnes
ota in 2003. As director of the CHR at UWC\, Lalu oversaw the establishme
nt of the first South African Department of Science and Innovation-Nation
al Research Foundation Flagship initiative in 2016\, following a national
competition across the fields of the Humanities and Natural and Physical
Sciences.\n\nLunch will be served. RSVP at https://duke.is/je4s6!

DESCRIPTION:RNA binding proteins (RBPs) are key regulators of gene express
ion. I will describe a new resource\, the RBPzoo\, which contains RNA mot
ifs derived from in vitro selection data for 381 eukaryotic RBPs. I will
also introduce a new machine learning algorithm\, Joint Protein-Ligand Em
bedding (JPLE)\, which we trained on RBPzoo to learn a mapping from an RB
P's sequence to its RNA motif. We used JPLE to assign RNA motifs and the
specificity-determining residues to protein sequences for nearly 30\,000
RBPs from 690 eukaryotes. To illustrate the power of this resource\, we i
dentify 12 Arabidopsis thaliana mRNA-stability-affecting RBPs based only
on their amino acid sequence and tissue-specific RNA-seq for A. thaliana.
We also reconstruct the evolution of >2\,500 groups of RBP motifs\, find
ing that 19 motifs representing core RNA processing functions are deeply
conserved between plants and metazoa. Finally\, we identify three phases
of rapid motif expansion: one corresponding with two whole-genome-duplica
tions in the vertebrate lineage and two recent expansions in the flowerin
 g plants and nematode lineages.

DESCRIPTION:LUNCH: \nLunch will be served at 11:45 am. \n\nABSTRACT: \nDat
a Provenance\, also referred to as Data Lineage\, is metadata that descri
bes from where a digital artifact came. People have argued that such meta
data is useful for myriad applications such as reproducibility\, forensic
  analysis\, intrusion detection\, data retention\, regulatory compliance\
, and more. Unfortunately\, the vast majority of work in the area focuses
on standardization and collection\, not applications. As a result\, adop
tion of provenance in industry has been practically non existent. \n\nI'l
l present a short background and history of research on data provenance f
ollowed by a discussion of some real applications that we've developed (a
re developing)\, some challenges in building powerful provenance-based ap
plications\, and speculation about avenues of further research. \n\nSPEAK
