DESCRIPTION:THE WEIGHT OF LIGHT: PRINTMAKING AS DOCUMENTARY ART\nOn View M
 arch 19-April 18\nArtist Talk April 12 at 3:30PM\nCassilhaus\nRSVps reque
sted for viewing appointments and artist talk: RSVP at https://sites.duke
.edu/mfaeda2026/mort/\n\nThe Weight of Light: Printmaking as Documentary
Act explores what happens when the same photograph moves through differen
t material forms. Using a single image\, I print across historical and co
 ntemporary processes-including platinum\, cyanotype\, carbon transfer\, p
hotogravure\, risograph\, and wet plate collodion. \n\nEach process alter
s the image's surface\, depth\, and relationship to light. Rather than tr
eating printing as a neutral act of reproduction\, I approach it as inter
pretation. By holding the image constant and changing only the process\,
the project asks: In a world of frictionless digital images\, does the ma
terial form of a photograph shape its meaning? \n\nMy work begins with a
simple question: What changes when a photograph becomes a physical object
 \, something printed\, handled\, and encountered in real space? \n\nFor t
his thesis\, I print the same photograph across a range of historical and
  contemporary processes-from albumen and platinum-palladium to cyanotype\
 , carbon transfer\, photogravure\, risograph\, inkjet\, and wet plate col
lodion. Each version originates from the same digital file\, yet its mate
rial form shapes how it is read. Differences in surface\, tonal range\, s
cale\, and texture alter the image's presence. \n\nRather than treating p
rinting as neutral reproduction\, I approach it as interpretation. Each p
rocess carries its own history and expectations around permanence\, labor
\, access\, and authenticity-and these shape how the resulting image is r
eceived. Why does a photograph rendered in platinum feel more authoritati
ve than one produced by risograph or inkjet\, even when the image itself
is unchanged? The method of printing doesn't just affect appearance\; it
constructs credibility. \n\nIn a world of frictionless digital images\, t
his is easily overlooked. By holding the image constant and changing only
the process\, I make visible how material influences what we see\, what
we value\, and what we trust.

DESCRIPTION:THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PORTAL\nBy Allison "Sunny" Dean ('26)\n
 On View April 1-13 - Murthy Agora\nRubenstein Arts Center\n\nI am a write
r and artist fixated on using a camera to try and answer my questions. Mo
ving image moves me. In my work\, I reckon with how we can know the parti
culars or characteristics of a landscape but not know the landscape at al
 l. I am infatuated with and desperate to understand decaying places\, wit
h a particular interest in the unkempt physical and temporal residues of
human infrastructure. I explore the allocations of space in systems of su
ppression\, injustice\, and dislocation. My mediums include installation
and moving image\, which act in conversation to obscure reality and recal
l violations and scars inflicted on landscapes by institutions of oppress
ion.  \n\nThis Has Always Been a Portal is twofold. \n\nThe first\, a si
ngle channel short film documenting the landscape and visitation check-in
room at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center. Never able to enter\, and alw
ays on the peripheral\, the film experiments with the room's reality thro
ugh narration that recounts the processes of visiting an incarcerated lov
 ed one.  \n\nThe second\, a multimedia installation of the room itself\;
the fleeting and unstable nature of memory physicalized through the struc
tural design. Relying on sensory and spatial residues to guide me\, the r
oom is built on my memories alone. \n\nTogether these works speak to lan
dscapes on the fringe of carceral and civilian life and detail the spatia
l record that is left behind through the movements of bodies in these pas
 sthrough\, temporary spaces.

DESCRIPTION:SLEEPWALKING IN ETERNAL NAP\nBy Lala Luo ('26)\nOn View April
 3-13 - Rubenstein Gallery 235\nFilm Screening April 4 at 12:00PM - Rubens
 tein Film Theater\nRubenstein Arts Center\n\nMultimedia Installation\n\nM
y work explores how memories and emotions circulate across physical space
 s\, systems\, and temporalities. I'm drawn to heartache\, nostalgia\, and
unstable collective realities: feelings that are not entirely one's own\
, yet deeply felt. I treat fantasy as a structural necessity rather than
an escape\, using fiction to explore how subjects know themselves through
what is missing\, deferred\, or impossible to revisit. Working with movi
 ng images\, installation\, and simulated media\, I fragment and re-stage
materials instead of presenting stable narratives. These works hover betw
een estrangement and sincerity\, using dark humor to frame heartache as a
way of sensing time out of joint\, and imagining what might have been ot
 herwise.

le Mbembe\, Toril Moi\, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak\n\nFredric Jameson
(1934-2024) insisted on "imagining a future which might be radically and
constitutionally other." The urgency of this task rested on his understa
nding of Critical Theory "as a way of keeping the negative alive in a per
iod in which praxis\, the unity of the negative and the positive\, itself
seems suspended." Over the years\, Critical Theory has received scholarl
y and popular attention\; it has simultaneously been pronounced dead and
an enduring threat. We invite scholars\, including students\, to join us
at Duke University for a three-day celebration of Fredric Jameson's endur
ing legacy-and to keep imagining\, with him\, the future of Critical Theo
ry.\n\nThe conference is organized by Duke's Graduate Program in Literatu
re\, where Jameson taught for forty years\, and the John Hope Franklin Hu
manities Institute. We acknowledge the generous support of the Holberg Pr
ize Committee\, Norway.\n\nRegistration is now open.\n\nWe invite scholar
s\, students\, and members of the public to join us in Durham for three d
ays of conversation\, reflection\, and debate.

DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of the 1950s\, Julian Schwinger laid the foun
dation of quantum electrodynamics\, the quantum theory of light and matte
r\, work for which he shared a Nobel Prize. Through the remainder of the
decade\, his intellectual influence on particle physics was difficult to
overstate\; physicists at CERN joked that reading The Physical Review\, o
ne might think that all submissions in particle physics were required to
begin\, ``According to Schwinger...''. However\, by the late 1960s Schwin
ger had broken away from mainstream particle theory\, and he spent the re
maining 25 years of his career in increasing intellectual isolation. Why?
\n\nIn this talk\, I will combine archival materials and unpublished lect
ures with Schwinger's published work to flesh out a set of largely unseen
\, but deeply held\, philosophical commitments that significantly influen
ced Schwinger throughout his career. It is sometimes said that post-war A
merican physicists outright rejected the mixing of philosophy and physics
favored by their interwar European predecessors. Schwinger provides an i
nteresting case of a more clandestine way that philosophical commitments
 operated in postwar American physics.

DESCRIPTION:In this work\, we develop a Bayesian nonparametric framework f
or modeling time-varying data in a generalized latent trait setting. Whil
e most Bayesian nonparametric methods are designed for static settings\,
many modern applications require priors that evolve over time. We address
this need by introducing a unified class of time-dependent random measur
es for models with exponential-family likelihoods.\n\nOur approach builds
on conjugacy arguments from Bayesian parametric modeling and extends the
m to the nonparametric setting through a suitable class of completely ran
dom measures. This yields a tractable construction and induces flexible t
ransition kernels for the latent random measures.\nThe resulting process
admits a representation resembling a first-order autoregressive structure
\, providing both interpretability and a basis for richer temporal depend
ence structures. As a primary application\, we focus on dynamic feature a
llocation models\, in which the proposed framework naturally captures the
emergence\, disappearance\, and reappearance of latent features over tim
 e. \n\nJoint work with Alessandro Colombi (Bocconi University - Italy)\,

DESCRIPTION:This talk considers a recent UK-based audiocassette collection
  - the Tape Letters Project founded by sound artist Wajid Yaseen - as an
"anarchival" source of diasporic history\, drawn from the closets and att
ics of Pakistani communities relocated to the United Kingdom after Partit
ion. Rather than focusing on the changes that recording technology has wr
ought on local traditions or the continuity of style\, I am specifically
concerned with the material networks of intercommunication used by genera
tions of cassettes to recollect and reproduce diasporic memory. How do ph
ysical sound media both provoke and radically alter the contemporary cons
truction of migratory histories? "Anarchives" propose anti-canonical uses
of sound recordings that reflect on the loss and displacement of collect
ive history. Tape Letters are complicated. Their obsolete and overflowing
forms refuse to be inscribed into a state-driven politics of recognition
and digital accessibility\, but their physical persistence houses the co
mplex memorialization of traumatic experience in its all of its compressi
ons\, erasures\, gaps\, drop-outs\, wows and flutters. If anarchival list
ening demands particular and personal levels of knowledge\, this is not a
bug but a feature. Who better to unpack the burden of memory dubbed onto
cassettes than those who have taken the time to collect them?\n\nDavid N
ovak is Associate Professor in Music and Director of the Center for the I
nterdisciplinary Study of Music at University of California Santa Barbara
. He is the author of Tapeheads: A Living History of the Cassette in Indo
nesia (Elevation 2025) and co-editor (with Matt Sakakeeny) of Keywords in
Sound (Duke 2015) and his award-winning book Japanoise: Music at the Edg
e of Circulation (Duke 2013) has been published in five languages. His cu
rrent project\, entitled Diggers: An Archival Counterhistory of Popular M
usic\, explores the globalization of music through networks of record and
cassette collectors\, informal sound archives\, reissue labels and media
digitization projects in the Global South.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Marit Tolo Østebø examines a U.S.-initiated rad
iological security program designed to prevent radiological terrorism and
its implementation within Ethiopia's emerging cancer-care infrastructure
. Drawing on multi-sited ethnographic research conducted between 2022 and
2025\, Østebø explores the suspicions\, negotiations\, and forms of resi
stance the program provoked among Ethiopian actors.\n\nThe presentation s
hows how radiotherapy\, security regimes\, and geopolitical power relatio
ns become entangled within global oncology. The Ethiopian case reveals ho
w nuclear history\, competing notions of exceptionalism\, and questions o
f authority and sovereignty shape what often is assumed to be an apolitic
al and benevolent domain of cancer care and research. In doing so\, it al
so challenges portrayals of African states as passive recipients of inter
 national security and development interventions.

DESCRIPTION:Screen/Society presents:\n\nTRANSIT\n(Christian Petzold\, 2019
\, 101 min\, Germany and France\, German and French with English subtitle
s\, DCP)\n\nIn Christian Petzold's brilliant and haunting adaptation of G
 erman novelist Anna Seghers's 1944 book TRANSIT\, a hollowed-out European
refugee (Franz Rogowski)\, who has escaped from two concentration camps\
, arrives in Marseille assuming the identity of a dead novelist whose pap
ers he is carrying. He enters the arid\, threadbare world of the refugee
community\, where he becomes enmeshed in the lives of a desperate young m
other and son and a mysterious woman named Marie (Paula Beer). TRANSIT is
a film told in two tenses: 1940 and right now\, historic past and immedi

le Mbembe\, Toril Moi\, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak\n\nFredric Jameson

DESCRIPTION:Join the Duke Chorale for a joyful afternoon honoring the ense
mble's seniors and alumni in a concert that celebrates community\, legacy
\, and the power of raising voices together. This special event brings cu
rrent Chorale members and returning alumni onto the same stage\, creating
a rich tapestry of shared musical memories and new artistic connections.
\n\nCentered around American music\, the program highlights the breadth a
nd beauty of the nation's choral traditions-from folk and spiritual arran
gements to contemporary works that speak to resilience\, hope\, and colle
ctive belonging. Each piece reflects the vibrant musical culture that has
shaped the Chorale through generations of student singers.\n\nSenior mem
bers will be recognized for their artistry\, leadership\, and contributio
ns to the ensemble\, while alumni join in song to reconnect with a commun
ity that has played a meaningful role in their Duke experience. Together\
, they embody the Chorale's enduring spirit: a commitment to excellence\,
fellowship\, and the joy of singing as one.\n\nSet within the soaring ac
oustics of Baldwin Auditorium\, this uplifting concert invites families\,
friends\, and the broader Duke community to celebrate the voices and sto
ries that make the Duke Chorale such a treasured part of campus life.\n\n
Free and open to the public. All are welcome.
