DESCRIPTION:"When I was 13\, I made a ballpoint pen drawing on notebook pa
per of my Dad's smiling face. I cut the drawing to the edge of the shape
of his head to allow it to be easily transferred to any background that
he chose. This was a gift for his 31st birthday. He still has the drawing
. (I only cringed a little when I saw it again.) I'm named after my fathe
r. He was named after his mother's brother\, William Paul Mickens\, whos
e life was taken one month before my father was born. William Paul Neal
is a meticulous and uber-organized handyman\, witty and charming. He was
raised mostly by his grandmother along with four sisters and two brother
s. They grew up one block east of my mother's family in Roseland\, on the
Southside of Chicago. \n\nAn overdue realization of the impeccable resi
lience of my mother and father sparked my obsession with unraveling the t
angled layers of our family histories. Many stories have been brought to
life for me by revisiting and being introduced to images of people that
I have limited knowledge of. Given the marvelous surface details and the
rich interior narratives they hold\, a high definition image [drawing\, p
ainting\, or photograph] of a loved one is a priceless treasure to me. D
epending on the perspective\, the stories in these pictures may transform
over time\, but however they change\, they typically help us remember so
mething valuable about the person(s) depicted.\n\nSince the summer of 202
3\, I have been searching for\, requesting\, and collecting photographs o
f many of my daughter Indigo's direct ancestors. The stories these photo
s tell range from facts corroborated by government records to aspirationa
l fantasies only known to select members of the family. This project is
intended to be a platform for exploring the visible as well as the unseen
aspects of genetic inheritance. Aspiring to the nature of a family at i
ts best\, this has truly been a collaborative process. I have invited cr
eatives who share common ancestors with Indigo to contribute to this livi
ng archive. Thank you to the generous kinfolk who continue to help us all

24-25 Bacca Fellowship for Undergraduate Course Enhancement in Language\,
Arts and Media.\n\nThe Bacca Fellowship aims to create an invigorating\,
collegial faculty learning community (FLC) where faculty from across dis
ciplines can together reflect on their undergraduate pedagogies and devel
op dynamic plans to achieve their desired LAMP-related learning outcomes
for undergraduates.\n\nBacca Fellows explore undergraduate course enhance
ments through new pedagogies or materials consistent with any of the foll
owing LAMP strategic priorities:\n\nMedia Literacy \n \nMultimedia Desig
n \n \nTeaching with Creativity\n \nPublic Engagement with Language\, Ar
ts and Media\n\nThe Bacca Fellowship includes a day-long introductory wor
kshop in late August\, monthly Bacca Fellow meetings during fall 2024\, o
pportunities for individual consultations\, workshops\, and class visits
during spring 2025\, and a final group meeting at the end of spring semes
ter where Bacca Fellows share reflections on their pedagogical projects.\

DESCRIPTION:The Duke Center for International Development will present the
results of a multi-pronged study that culminated in a randomized control
led trial (RCT) funded by the USAID-Laser Pulse Initiative in Vietnam. Wo
rk on the relationship between regulation and bribery generally treats bu
sinesses as victims of malfeasance by politicians or bureaucrats. In this
session\, we will challenge this consensus by presenting a theory of cha
nge illustrating how poorly managed firms may initiate bribes to gatekeep
ers either as part of a strategy to avoid regulatory compliance or becaus
e lax internal controls allow employees to independently bribe for person
al gain. We will then present tests of these hypotheses\, describing two
linked investigations. The session will involve three components. First\,
we will present survey data from close to 200\,000 firms in 154 economie
s to demonstrate that a global negative relationship exists between bribe
payments and both productivity and management quality\, measured by the
World Management Survey. Second\, we explore the causality of this relati
onship by discussing the results of a USAID-funded randomized evaluation
of a firm level training intervention in Vietnam. We will present evidenc
e that firm training on management and internal controls training led to
dramatic reductions in both the scale and scope of corruption. Firms in t
he management and internal controls training were 33 percentage points le
ss likely to bribe (75% to 42%) and had one-third smaller bribe amounts\,
saving $307 over the placebo group in the month before the Endline surve
y. In the final section of this session\, we will discuss how these findi
ngs help guide scalable\, private sector-driven interventions to improve
firm efficiency and productivity as well as broader economic\, environmen
tal\, and health outcomes.\n\nThis presentation is part of USAID's Agency
Learning and Evidence Month\, a celebration of research\, evaluation and
learning that brings together diverse development actors to exchange wit
h one another and hear the latest evidence on global priorities.

DESCRIPTION:Tonisha Kearney-Ramos\, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Cli
nical Neurobiology in Psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Ce
nter (CUIMC) and the Division on Substance Use Disorders (SUD) at the New
York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI). She is the Founding Co-Directo
r of NYSPI's Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Core\, for which she also
serves as Training Director\, Vice Chair of CUIMC's Smithers Foundation A
ddiction Research Pilot Grant program\, and Affiliate Faculty at Columbia
's Clinical Cognitive Computational Neuroscience (C3N) Center. As a clini
cal neuroscientist\, her research focuses on using functional neuroimagin
g to study the neural encoding of cognition and behavior in substance add
iction. Her work involves using network-based neuroimaging to identify br
ain biomarkers of cognitive and behavioral dysfunction in SUDs\, in addit
ion to assessing the impact of brain stimulation on brain organization an
d the utility of brain stimulation as a treatment for addiction. Her long
-term research program is to develop multidisciplinary pipelines for the
investigation of integrated therapeutic approaches for addiction and othe
r psychiatric conditions\, such as combined brain stimulation\, pharmacot

DESCRIPTION:Research in stroke prevention requires inclusion of a broad ra
nge of data sets from different cohorts. Integrating and harmonizing diff
erent data sources are essential to increase generalizability\, sample si
ze\, and representation of understudied populations-strengthening the evi
dence for the scientific questions being addressed. To that end\, Duke AI
Health and the American Heart Association have developed an open metadat
a repository for the harmonization of stroke risk prediction variables fr
om four large\, National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded cohort studies
: REGARDS (Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke)\, FHS
(Framingham Heart Study)\, MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis)\
, and ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities). In this webinar\, we wi
ll present an overview of the metadata repository and walk through its fe
atures\, including variable distributions\, collection time periods\, and
search filters. We will also discuss several use cases for incorporating
this resource into your research for harmonizing data.
