DESCRIPTION:Title: Applications of Nonlinear\, Femtosecond Laser Systems f
or Understanding Artists' Historical Pigments\n\n\nAbstract: The field of
technical art history brings together scientists\, conservators\, and cu
rators to better our understanding of artists' materials and their works.
The technical toolbox for analysis includes techniques that observe how
light interacts with a sample\, such as reflectance spectroscopy\, Raman
spectroscopy\, or x-radiography. While these techniques have their streng
ths\, there are still some materials that prove difficult. Here\, I discu
ss the use of nonlinear optical techniques\, such as pump-probe microscop
y\, to expand the toolbox to address materials that are otherwise challen
ging with conventional techniques.\n\nIn chapter 4\, I will focus on the
study of four of the most commonly used carbon-based black pigments. Thes
e pigments are often difficult to study with noninvasive methods as they
are primarily carbon-based and black in color\, meaning there is little d
ifferentiation that can be done elementally or spectrally. I demonstrate
the ability of pump-probe microscopy\, coupled with a simple machine lear
ning algorithm\, to differentiate the four carbon-based black pigments fo
cused on not only in individual paint-outs\, but also in two-black pigmen
t mixtures and when each black pigment is mixed with a historically relev
ant colorful pigment.\n\nChapter 5 shifts to my work constructing a syste
m that combines pump-probe microscopy with stimulated Raman scattering. R
aman spectroscopy is a powerful tool for identifying pigments due to its
molecular specificity. By coupling the nonlinear version\, stimulated Ram
an scattering\, with pump-probe microscopy\, my goal is to achieve co-reg
istered data for samples where Raman data and pump-probe date could provi
de complementary information.\n\nTechnical art history comes back to be t
he main focus in chapter 6 as I discuss my collaboration with the Nasher
Museum of Art over the course of the past year. This work stems from both
pedagogical and technical efforts to support an art history course\, Cur
atorial Practicum\, and the resulting gallery exhibition\, On the Same Wa
velength: Art\, Science and Conservation\, that was at the Nasher Museum
of Art. I will share insights gathered from the technical analysis on the
museum objects performed by myself and collaborators.

DESCRIPTION:Conjugated dienes and enynes serve as important building block
s for constructing molecules with high complexity\, yet achieving regio-
and stereocontrol in their difunctionalization remains a persistent chall
enge. To address these problems\, we develop difunctionalization utilizin
g a palladium catalyst\, enabling regioselective and enantioselective rea
ctions. For 1\,3-dienes\, regioselectivity can be controlled by different
catalytic systems\, and thermally disfavored 4\,1-selective alkenylamina
tion for aryl dienes can be achieved by using indole-derived phosphoramid
ite ligand\, while Xantphos ligand favors classic 4\,3-addition. This pro
tocol demonstrated great functional group tolerance\, delivering allylic
amines with an extra alkene functionality for further functionalization.
For internal 1\,3-enynes\, the diastereoselectivity can be controlled by
the conformation of the enynes\, while the enantioselectivity is determin
ed by the catalyst\, thus affording the trisubstituted allenes bearing ax
ial and central chirality in one single step. Different functional groups
\, including OTBS and NBoc groups\, can be tolerated with high efficiency
. Both methods are compatible under one mmol scale\, demonstrating their
practicality in synthesis. Coordinating counteranion is detrimental to bo
th reactions\, diminishing selectivity and the yield. Mechanistic studies
reveal that the 4\,1-selectivity for the aryl dienes is likely accomplis
hed via π-stacking-stabilized transition states\, whereas the enantiosele
ctivity for the enyne difunctionalization is achieved by the substituent
on the enyne distinguishing the key intermediates. This work establishes
general methods for palladium-catalyzed difunctionalization over conjugat
ed π systems\, realizing rapid access to pharmaceutically relevant comple
x structures while providing mechanistic insight for future research.

DESCRIPTION:Transition metal catalysis has emerged as an invaluable tool f
or the development of novel reaction systems. Transition metal catalyzed
amination strategies are of the utmost importance due to the ubiquity of
nitrogen in bioactive compounds of interest\, ligands\, and catalysts. Gi
ven the high degree of molecular complexity within the sought-after nitro
gen-containing compounds\, reactions that are able to install multiple fu
nctionalities in fewer steps are more useful. To this end\, difunctionali
zation reactions have been researched using transition metal catalysis. T
he majority of the works already reported on transition metal catalyzed a
minofunctionalization rely on alkenes as substrates. However\, alkenes ar
e generally limited to accessing 1\,2-addition products.\nContrary to sim
ple alkenes\, 1\,3-dienes offer access to a wide variety of isomeric prod
ucts to deliver a range of aminated motifs based on regio-\, site-\, and
geometric selectivity. Despite this\, the subject of 1\,3-diene 1\,4-amin
ofunctionalizaiton remains underdeveloped and demands further study.\nBas
ed on this gap in the field\, a copper-catalyzed 1\,4-aminohydroxylation
reaction has been developed using O-benzoylhydroxylamines as an electroph
ilic source of aliphatic amines. The transformation delivers exclusively
1\,4-aminohydroxylated products by means of a carbonyl-assisted migration
pathway\, as confirmed by various mechanistic experiments. The reaction
system is amenable to a wide variety of carbonyl-containing 1\,3-diene su
bstrates and has been successfully expanded to deliver exclusive 1\,4-ami
 nothiolated products from thioamide-containing 1\,3-dienes.\nCyclopropane
s represent another class of difunctionalization substrate that remains u
nderdeveloped. The difunctionalization of cyclopropanes by ring-opening r
eactions serves as an access point to 1\,3-functionalized motifs\, a subs
titution pattern inaccessible by alkene or diene functionalization. Utili
zing the unique reactivity of cyclopropanes for ring-opening difunctional
 ization\, an enantioselective copper-catalyzed 1\,3-aminoalkynylation of
non-activated aryl cyclopropanes has been established.

DESCRIPTION:Non-precious metal nitrides for efficient electrochemical wate
r splitting\n\nGrowing global energy demands coupled with the detrimental
environmental impacts of fossil fuel combustion highlight an urgent need
to develop sustainable energy technologies. Electrochemical water splitt
ing stands as a promising approach to convert renewable energy sources to
hydrogen\, a clean and carbon free energy carrier\, for applications and
energy transportation. However\, the process requires efficient\, durabl
e\, and cost-effective electrocatalysts that are still being developed. N
on-precious metal nitrides have recently garnered significant attention d
ue to their excellent catalytic properties\, low cost\, and high stabilit
 y. This thesis focuses on several important aspects related to this catal
yst family. Chapter 1 discusses recent advancements and fundamental metho
dologies in electrocatalyst research relevant to water splitting applicat
ions. Chapter 2 describes the system involving the development of nitrida
ted NiMoO₄ nanoneedles as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction
(HER). The optimized material shows strong HER performance in alkaline so
lution\, with low overpotentials\, favorable Tafel slopes\, and stable lo
ng-term operation. Notably\, the catalyst reaches a high current density
of 350 mA/cm² at an overpotential of only -10 mV\, showing its potential
for practical hydrogen production. Chapter 3 focuses on Co₃Mo₃N nanoparti
cles used as a photo-thermal electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution rea
ction (OER) and its improved performance under both light and heat. Elect
rochemical testing shows that Co₃Mo₃N catalyst has a significant photo-th
ermal enhancement in OER. For example\, under 2 watts of blue light\, it
achieves a 150% increase in current density at an overpotential of 0.34 V
. The outstanding effect of photo-thermal enhancement of the catalyst ind
icates its potential in light-assisted water-splitting technologies. Over
all\, this research supports the development of affordable\, high-perform
ance catalytic materials for clean energy applications.

DESCRIPTION:Harnessing the Full Solar Spectrum: Leveraging Both Thermal an
d Nonthermal Pathways in Plasmonic Catalysis for Net-Zero Carbon Fuel Pro
duction\n\nPlasmonic photocatalysis offers a promising strategy for conve
rting solar energy into chemical fuels by leveraging localized surface pl
asmon resonance (LSPR) in metallic nanostructures. In this dissertation\,
I investigate the fundamental mechanisms of plasmonic enhancement-namely
photothermal and nonthermal (electronic excitation) effects-and develop
quantitative methods to decouple their contributions under reaction condi
tions. By applying these methods to critical reactions such as carbon dio
xide hydrogenation and ammonia synthesis\, I demonstrate how plasmonic ef
fects can be tuned to drive chemical reactions. The insights gained enabl
e the rational design of broadband plasmonic systems capable of operating
under ambient conditions\, advancing the broader goal of sustainable and
  efficient chemical transformations.

DESCRIPTION:Structure-function relations and kinetic principles underlying
multiscale electron transfer in biology\n\nElectron transfer (ET) underl
ies fundamental biological processes such as respiration\, photosynthesis
\, redox catalysis\, and cellular signaling. This work investigates the s
tructure-function relations and kinetic principles governing efficient an
d controlled ET across multiscales in biological systems. Two major resea
rch directions are explored: free energy transduction by nanoscale molecu
lar machines and long-range extracellular ET in protein-based nanowires.
The first research direction focuses on understanding free energy transdu
ction in electron bifurcation (EB)\, a mechanism that couples exergonic a
nd endergonic ET reactions. We found that many-particle correlations are
essential to accurately describe EB\, and\, more broadly\, any process in
volving free energy transduction. To better represent biological conditio
ns such as spatial confinement and limited redox carrier pools\, we devel
oped an open many-particle system model that treats redox pools as finite
narrow-band reservoirs. Using this framework\, we identified that invert
ed redox potentials at the bifurcating site reduces slippage in the pre-s
teady-state regime. The second direction examines electron transport thro
ugh bacterial nanowires\, which enable extracellular ET by forming conduc
tive protein filaments. These nanowires exhibit anti-Arrhenius behavior\,
with conductivity decreasing as temperature increases\, a phenomenon inc
onsistent with conventional thermally activated hopping mechanisms. Our s
imulations show that electrostatic effects on the ET parameters alone can
not account for the anti-Arrhenius behavior. Instead\, the physical origi
n of anti-Arrhenius transport lies in other factors\, pointing to a more
complex structural or dynamical basis for the observed temperature depend
ence. Together\, these studies provide new insights into how biological E
T systems achieve efficiency and control\, emphasizing the role of physic
al constraints\, correlations\, and structural dynamics.
