dance of four men and a drum tossed between them\, a compelling explorat

y José Limón's description of Doris Humphrey's lost piece\, Orestes. Thro
ugh intricate movement\, virtuosic partnering\, and innovative music\, th
ey reimagine Limón's legacy while bridging eras of groundbreaking craftsm
anship. The Quake That Held them All is inspired by Limón's lost 1951 pie
ce created during his residency in Mexico City\, which was re-choreograph

learn about the engineering design process and use it to solve real-world

nhouse-Armstrong Lecture featuring guest speaker Nathan Hensley\, Associa
te Professor of English at Georgetown University. He will present "The Wo
men on the Stairs: Gesture\, Improvisation\, Solidarity" at 3:30 PM on Tu
esday\, September 30\, 2025\, in 314 of the Allen Building.\n\nProfessor
Hensley earned his PhD here at Duke University and was a Mellon/ACLS Diss
ertation Completion Fellow. In 2020\, Georgetown awarded him the Dean's A
ward for Excellence in Teaching. His work focuses on nineteenth-century B
ritish literature\, environmental humanities\, critical theory\, and the
novel\, as well as research in Anglophone modernism and the cultures of c
ontemporary globalization.\n\nAbstract:\n"What does it feel like to live
helplessly in a world that is coming undone? In this lecture\, Nathan K.
Hensley draws on his new book\, Action without Hope: Victorian Literature
after Climate Collapse (Chicago\, 2025)\, to propose three categories fo
r making change when altering the course of events feels impossible. Focu
sing on paintings of an extraction-scarred Jamaica by iterant watercolori
st William Berryman and tiny verse fragments by Emily Brontë\, Hensley sh
ows how these and other nineteenth-century thinkers construed revolution
in a minor key: they rescaled action away from the grandly heroic and tow
ard minor adjustments and collaborative interventions. Turning away from
logical proofs and direct argumentation\, they instead called on aestheti
c technologies and figural strategies\, finding scope for change not at t
he level of the theme or thesis but in small movements of hand and mind.
Focusing on these tiny disruptions helps suggest how close attention to V
ictorian literature can recover a prehistory for the deeply felt sense of
powerlessness many of us know all too well today and begin charting ways
out." \n\nThis lecture series was established to honor Professor Leonar
d Tennenhouse\, who retired at the end of the 2022 Fall semester and his
wife\, Professor Nancy Armstrong\, who retired during the 2023 academic y
ear. This lecture series is a token of the department's appreciation for

DESCRIPTION:The ODE Summer Design Camp is an immersive biomedical engineer
ing design experience. Over the course of five weeks\, participants will
learn about the engineering design process and use it to solve real-world
problems through a series of design workshops\, labs\, and innovation se
ssions. \n\nThis camp is a non-residential summer program for students fr
om Durham and the surrounding area. Students will come to Duke's campus e
ach day and head home at the end of the day's activities.\n\nThe next Sum

va\, dancers trek and search in the mountain mist under the moonlight\, s
inging soul-guiding chants while demonstrating a pure body gait of labor.
Pagarlava and the dancers went deep into the mountains in central Taiwan
\, to learn how to survive in mountainous forests in the Luluna village o
f the Bunun tribe in Nantou County. They collaborated with the Luluna Bun
un Choir and sang ancient Bunun chants\, which have been listed as a Cult
ural Heritage in Taiwan. From daily chants to the "exploit-boasting" acts
of traditional hunters\, they incorporate dance arts into the Bunun cult
ure to reflect the tradition\, reflect the contemporary\, and allow dance

learn about the engineering design process and use it to solve real-world
problems through a series of design workshops\, labs\, and innovation se
