DESCRIPTION:"Til Íslands" presents images of dislocation and reconnection
with the Icelandic landscape after over a century of separation. In the s
ummer of 2025\, Emma Geiger returned to the land left behind by her great
-great-grandmother in 1888\, documenting the delicate experience of becom
ing reacquainted with a landscape and people in the midst of dramatic env
ironmental change. "Til Íslands" features work created at her family's fa
rm on Lake Apavatn\, and at the Nes Artist Residency in Skagaströnd\; sti
ll and moving images\, phytograms of plants\, seaweed\, and wool\, and a
quilt naturally dyed with lupine\, rhubarb\, and lichen each reflect impr
essions of the Icelandic landscape and identity. \n\nAbout the artist: \n
\nEmma Geiger (MFA|EDA '22) is an artist\, photographer\, and songwriter
from Hopkinton\, New Hampshire\, working with natural materials and analo
g processes. She holds an MFA in Experimental and Documentary Art from Du
ke University\, and a graduate certificate in Visual Storytelling from th
e Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. In 2025\, she was awarded the C
assilhaus Travel Fellowship for her documentary project exploring her anc
estral connection to Iceland. Geiger writes and performs music and has re
leased two EPs - Haven (2022) and Reverse Bloom (2024). Across her visual
work and music\, nostalgia\, solitude\, and a lifelong relationship with

uence with Nguyen's newest book\, To Save and to Destroy\, which was shor
tlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism.\n\nThe d

essays here\, delivered originally as the prestigious Norton Lectures\, p
roffer a new answer to a classic literary question: What does the outside
r mean to literary writing? Over the course of six captivating and moving
chapters\, Nguyen explores the idea of being an outsider through lenses
that are\, by turns\, literary\, historical\, political\, and familial.\n
\nEach piece moves between writers who influenced Nguyen's craft and weav
es in the haunting story of his late mother's mental illness. Nguyen unfo
lds the novels and nonfiction of Herman Melville\, F. Scott Fitzgerald\,
Ralph Ellison\, William Carlos Williams\, and Maxine Hong Kingston\, unti
l aesthetic theories give way to pressing concerns raised by war and poli
tics. What is a writer's responsibility in a time of violence? Should we
celebrate fiction that gives voice to the voiceless-or do we confront the
forces that render millions voiceless in the first place? What are the b
urdens and pleasures of the "minor" writer in any society? Unsatisfied wi
th the modest inclusion accorded to "model minorities" such as Asian Amer
icans\, Nguyen sets the agenda for a more radical and disquieting solidar
ity with those whose lives have been devastated by imperialism and foreve
r wars.\n\nAbout the moderator\nEileen Cheng-yin Chow is Associate Profes
sor of the Practice in Chinese and Japanese Cultural Studies at Duke Univ
ersity\, and one of the founding directors of Story Lab at Duke. She is D
irector of Graduate Studies for APSI and a founding/core faculty member o
f Duke Asian American and Diaspora Studies program.

ke for over eighty 4th-6th grade students in Durham. Duke University's u
ndergraduate students serve as both counselors and mentors. For example\,
the theme of FEMMES+ Summer Camp 2019 was Blast to the Past\, and we inc
orporated fun hands-on activities such as crystal growing\, lava lamps\,
tie dye\, building an app\, and Newton's cradle. The camp was a huge succ
ess\, and we are excited to continue offering this opportunity to student

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAll interactions of materials with their respective
environments are controlled by the topography and chemical composition o
f their surfaces. Examples are the adhesion between two objects\, wetting
of surfaces by contacting liquids and the adsorption of molecules from t
he surrounding medium. Accordingly\, it is important to develop chemical
tools\, which allow the attachment of tailor-made polymer molecules to su
rfaces of different chemical composition and topology. \nIn our presentat
ion\, a simple\, new strategy will be presented which allows generating m
icropatterned polymer coatings with tailor-made properties with high spat
ial resolution. Our strategy is based on C\,H insertion reactions (C\,H i
nsertion crosslinking\, CHic). To this a prepolymer containing dormant gr
oups is deposited on the material to be coated by standard techniques of
coating application. Upon exposure to heat or light the dormant groups be
come activated and generate permanent links between the polymer chains an
d to the surface.\nAs the crosslinking is performed in the solid state th
e resulting surface-attached polymer networks become anisotropic when the
y are exposed to solvents. This prevents for entropic reasons the penetra
tion of such layers by macromolecules. This 'entropic shielding' paves th
e way to surfaces with very unusual properties\, for example extremely lo
w friction or protein- and cell repellent surface. We discuss the fundame
ntals of the process and demonstrate that this strategy can be used for a
broad spectrum of different applications. It is used to reduce the frict
ion of surfaces mimicking human joints by more than 99\,5% or use such sy
stems for self-shading buildings in architecture. Additionally\, we demon
strate that such surfaces can be used in various biomedical applications.
We can isolate 1 single circulating tumor cell from a background of 30 b
illion other cells within come 40 seconds or demonstrate the generation o
f a gym for single biological cells to study mechanotransduction.

s encourages managers to take a mindful approach to leading people using

ure\, blood glucose\, BMI\, waist circumference height\, weight and body
mass index measurements. Additionally\, there is a goal setting and refer
ral session with a nurse\, dietitian\, or fitness specialist. Many partic
ipants find the coaching session helps them get started making lifestyle
changes and connects them to LIVE FOR LIFE and community resources to sup
