DESCRIPTION:Courtney Reid-Eaton\, Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) exh
ibitions director and creative director of CDS's Documentary Diversity Pr
oject:\n\n"In January of 2018\, four Emerging Documentary Artists (EDAs)-
Brittany Barbee\, Steven Cheek Jr.\, Paul A. Newman Jr.\, and Gregory Wea
ver II-joined the staff of the Center for Documentary Studies as part of
the Documentary Diversity Project (DDP)\, a three-year pilot program to c
reate platforms on which more people of color would build careers in\, an
d nurture a passion for critical consumption of\, the documentary arts. A
mbria McNeill\, CDS's 2017-18 exhibitions intern and a generational peer
of the EDAs\, has been a vital part of the development of the DDP. All of
them came with an attitude of openness and have been experimenting with
a variety of tools.\n\nWhen asked to submit work for an exhibition\, the
EDAs all-bravely-shared slices of their lives. Brittany described it beau
tifully in an email\, "Title of the exhibition? I am not sure but I know
we all submitted things that are dear to us." What a perfect way to intro
duce themselves\, by saying: This is something I care deeply about.\n\nIn
the first CDS DDP exhibition\, "Dear": Ambria McNeill considers the last
ing impressions of past relationships\; Gregory Weaver II shouts out sout
hern skate culture\; Brittany Barbee celebrates home\; Steven Cheek Jr. s
hares grief and resilience\; and Paul Newman Jr. introduces his Durham.

DESCRIPTION:Opening reception on September 20th\, 2018 at 6:15 pm - 8:00 p
m.\n\nEric Leleu is an independent documentary photographer based in Nort
hern France. He began his career as a documentary photographer in Shangha
i in 2005\, where he lived and worked until 2016. For the past thirteen y
ears\, Leleu has documented China's changing urban landscapes and the way
people use\, transform\, and play with their new and old environments. H
e also documented the craft of political propaganda and the many forms po
litical communications take in China. He developed a body of personal wor
k that blurs the boundaries between art and documentary\, as well as real
ity and fiction. Today\, he works in his home region where he is currentl
y restoring the farm he grew up in and that he has been documenting for a
long time. Leleu is currently using the buildings of his farm to create
a photo gallery and a community center where farm produce will be sold. L
 a Musette - Leleu's farm - will open in 2019.\n\nIn 2017\, he started to
photograph the growing security infrastructure - border walls\, flooded z
ones\, watchtowers - meant to deter refugees and migrants from settling i
n Calais\, France. In the meantime\, he documents the Calais "jungles" -
or makeshift camps - where people who risk their lives to cross the Engli
sh Channel on a daily basis and where new solidarities emerge between mig
rants and a local population that was itself shaped by centuries of immig
 ration.

DESCRIPTION:I've been a woodworker since I was a boy building treehouses w
ith "scrap" wood\, stepping on rusty nails. I started woodturning about 1
5 years ago at my brother-in-law's wedding. It was a life-changing moment
to see an old piece of mesquite wood come to life as the grain and figur
e were exposed by turning away the outer bark and sapwood. At that point
I decided to focus on turning and its become my passion! Since then\, I h
ave been constantly learning and experimenting with new techniques and st

DESCRIPTION:New work by Tamika Galanis in "One Hurricane Season" is part o
f an ongoing project that the artist/documentarian describes as her life'
s work\, centering around the representation and history of her native Ba
hamas. The exhibition evolved from the time she spent with family in the
Bahamas in the summer and early fall of 2017\, anticipating and in the wa
ke of two hurricanes. As Irma and Maria were devastating the Caribbean\,
Galanis was also witnessing the progression of her grandmother's dementia
. Incorporating archival family photos and videos as well as natural mate
rials\, One Hurricane Season "likens my personal experience with my grand
mother to what happened to the countries throughout the Caribbean in that
hurricane season\," says Galanis. "What does it mean to wake up in a pla
ce\, to wake up in a body\, that's different than it's been for its compl
ete existence? It's a very personal foray into a global story."\n\nThe ai
m of her larger ongoing project\, Hacking the Narrative\, "is\, during th
is age of climate change\, to capture a much more nuanced Bahamian experi
ence than the outward-facing story of 'island paradise' that the rest of
the world gets." Believing it's just a matter of time before the Bahamas
start to disappear\, Galanis wants to capture the experience of everyday
Bahamians. "Our experience is not going to be told by the colonial archiv
e and it's not going to be told by contemporary ad agencies because we ha
ve been erased from that story. We are not there."

DESCRIPTION:The art exhibit Visionary Aponte: Art & Black Freedom focuses
on an extraordinary - and now lost - historical artifact: a "Book of Pain
tings" created by José Antonio Aponte\, a free black carpenter\, artist\,
and former soldier who was also the leader of an ambitious antislavery m
ovement in Cuba during the Age of Revolution. During his trial\, Aponte w
as forced to describe each of the pictures in his book\, which portrayed
a wide array of subjects\, from Biblical scenes to episodes in the histor
 y of Africa\, Europe\, and the Americas. Using those descriptions\, the i
nvited artists\, working across multiple mediums\, have reimagined Aponte
's book for our present and future. \n\nThe Visionary Aponte exhibit will
be on view at the Power Plant Gallery on the American Tobacco Campus fro
 m September 19\, 2018\, to November 17\, 2018.\n\n-----\n\nMORE INFO: apo
nte.dukefsp.org\n\n-----\n\nThis event is the basis of Visionary Aponte:
 Art & Black Freedom\, a nine-week exhibition and accompanying series of c
 onversations\, screenings\, performances\, residencies\, and workshops at
Duke University organized by the Power Plant Gallery and the Forum for S
cholars and Publics. The exhibit is curated by Édouard Duval-Carrié and A

DESCRIPTION:In an effort to support the active duty\, veteran and military
family members of the North Carolina community through continuing educat
ion\, Duke University School of Nursing in partnership with Duke Universi
ty School of Medicine and the DUSON chapter of Active Minds are hosting a
seminar to decrease the stigma associated with PTSD and other mental hea
lth disorders and to point health care providers towards low-cost medical
options for veterans and veteran treatment courts that aid those with su
bstance abuse issues. Attendees will receive information regarding outsid
e-the-box treatments and how to access them and strategies to help educat
e health care providers on military cultural competencies\, to help them
access available resources for active duty military service members\, vet
erans and their families and to help identify the most innovative treatme
nts necessary to facilitate the best possible outcomes. Today in the Unit
ed States\, mental disorders including PTSD and traumatic brain injury (T
BI) are a significant cause of disability and morbidity in the U.S. milit
ary and veteran population. North Carolina has the fourth largest militar
y morbidity in the United States and is home to veterans from WWII\, Kore
a\, Vietnam\, the first Gulf Ware and most recently\, the wars in Iraq an
d Afghanistan. As of 2015\, there were over 100\,000 active duty military
\, 12\,000 National Guard reserves and over 775\,000 veterans in North Ca
 rolina.

interact with the world late into the life course. A core objective of a
ging research is to understand the factors that impact functional ability
and to inform personal\, clinical and public policy decisions that promo
te successful aging for individuals and populations. \n\nThe WHO has illu
strated this goal by describing a series of desirable trajectories of fun
ctional ability. However\, there is no current causal model to explain wh
at produces these prototypical life course trajectories. \n\nDr. Matchar
will discuss a parsimonious dynamic simulation model developed in Vensim
that can recreate a wide variety of trajectories for functional ability d
escribed by the WHO. Because the model is based on explicit\, testable hy
potheses about causal relationships\, it promotes the generation and test
ing of improved hypotheses about the determinants of functional trajector
ies both in the short- and long-term\, and the identification of potentia
l interventions to optimize that trajectory based on underlying drivers o
f functional loss or recovery at the individual level. \n\nJOIN WEBEX MEE

DESCRIPTION:The maturation of the frontal cortex occurs over adolescence a
nd is accompanied by dramatic changes in behavior in mammalian species. T
his period of brain development is often viewed as a late sensitive perio
d for learning and higher cognition and is also a moment of psychiatric v
ulnerability in humans. Our lab uses mouse models to access the cellular
and synaptic aspects of frontal cortex maturation. I will review how cell
s and synapses and frontal cortex-relevant behaviors change through adole
scence in mice and discuss the role of experience and pubertal hormones i
