DESCRIPTION:The capabilities of data visualization and analytics toolkits 
 are often driven only by the needs of the creator or the customer. In ord
 er to be more adaptable\, the tool must be tested against a wider range o
 f scenarios. The VAST Challenge program helps with this testing by provid
 ing a new set of data with embedded ground truths each year and inviting 
 teams from around the world to share their findings and processes. In thi
 s talk we will discuss SAS's involvement in the VAST Challenge and presen
 t our entry for 2017.

 tectural prototypes and climate-change models\, models are ubiquitous and
  increasingly powerful. Visualization is modeling by a different name. In
  order to better understand the strengths and weakness of models-both our
  own and others'-I offer a short definition that is applicable to them al
 l. This definition depends heavily of assessments of models made by scien
 tists\, social scientists and philosophers of science. But it also posits
  attributes to all model-types that those folks have found controversial.

DESCRIPTION:In 2016\, Duke University Libraries purchased a Multispectral 
 Imaging (MSI) system. MSI is a hardware and software system that combines
  infrared\, ultraviolet\, and visible light waves with camera filters in 
 order to reveal text or other object characteristics that are obscured or
  not visible to the naked eye. Since the purchase\, a cross-departmental 
 team of librarians and technologists have researched\, explored\, and gai
 ned experience using the system in order to develop a service for the Duk
 e research community. Join the team as they discuss MSI and how it can be
  employed to study papyri\, manuscripts\, 20th century paper and inks and
  other unique items from Duke University Libraries' collections.

DESCRIPTION:At our recent annual Retreat\, the Regeneration Next Initiativ
 e experimented with a draw-your-research format for our poster session. R
 ather than simply un-tubing that poster they took to the Association of W
 hatever annual conference\, presenters were asked to DRAW their poster fr
 esh and hot on a plain sheet of white paper in 15 minutes\, using nothing
  more than an idea and a couple of markers. This created a lot of buzz an
 d unleashed a lot of creativity. How do you go about presenting scientifi
 c research without the aid of graphs\, charts\, and error bars? How do yo
 u create an engaging\, yet accurate poster that tells the story of your r
 esearch in just 15 minutes? What worked well\, what didn't work so well? 
 We will discuss this old-school approach to visualization of research fin
 dings.\n\nNote: this talk was originally scheduled for February 9\, but i
 t has been moved to March 2.

 the most instructive processes is critiquing published visualizations and
  reviewing reworks posted by professionals. What is often hidden from us\
 , though\, is the progression of an individual visualization throughout t

 er the past few years I've been chipping away at this question with a ser
 ies of studies that first refine our definition of network visualization 
 literacy and then evaluate literacy levels across different users\, datas
 ets\, and visual properties. The results suggest that there are a few thi
 ngs visualization designers can do to improve the accuracy with which use

 but where do they come from? In this talk\, I will discuss some of the st
 udies that inspired popular data visualization best practices\, and what
