Postdoc Practice Job Talk

The Duke University Postdoc Association (DUPA) and the Office of Postdoctoral Services provide postdocs the opportunity to practice their job talks and get valuable feedback from a diverse and intelligent audience - this means YOU! If you are interested in giving a practice job talk, please e-mail Ashley and Will (see below).

On Jan 18 at 10:00 am, Bonnie Kaiser from the Duke Global Health Institute will present her talk on "Cultural Idioms, Contested Measures, and Intervening in Global Mental Health: The Case of Haiti" (abstract below). We encourage postdocs to attend and support Bonnie by providing feedback! You don't have to be in the same field of study; presenters receive valuable info from audience members about clarity, communication style, and other 'big picture' issues.

Title and Abstract: Cultural Idioms, Contested Measures, and Intervening in Global Mental Health: The Case of Haiti
Drawing on examples from Haiti, this talk provides an overview of anthropology's critical yet solution-oriented engagement with global mental health. I offer several examples of the way that an anthropological perspective can contribute to improved screening, clinical communication, and intervention design. Finally, I show how attention to cultural models and language can improve mental health care, and I explore the role of Vodou in treatment-seeking behavior.
