CEE Seminar: Crossing the Valley of Death: Going from Research in Computational Methods to Solving Real World Problems in Fluid Structure Interaction

Over the last few decades, advanced numerical techniques for moving boundary and multiphase problems have demonstrated an impressive level of physical realism, which has made them critical tools for the film industry. These methods include a range of level set, particle, and volume-of-fluid methods, all of which have been used for generating digital effects in big budget films. This presentation will focus on efforts at our laboratory over the last ten years to extend these same methods in the context of reliable finite element tools for real-world multiphase fluid-structure interaction analyses. The particular methods discussed will include hybrid level set finite element methods and unfitted finite element methods for modeling air/water/solid interactions.....
