Celebration of Duke and Indigenous Oaxacan Organization's Collaboration

Duke students engage in research in Oaxaca Mexico
Wednesday, April 10, 2019
3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Join us for this event to recognize and honor the strong and enduring connections between Duke and ICICO a Mexican indigenous organization.

The Integrator of Campesino and Indigenous Communities of Oaxaca (ICICO) brings together indigenous communities in Mexico to develop and market forest-based carbon offsets, helping the world combat climate change and supporting the sustainability of their culture and livelihoods. The organization has been collaborating with Duke researchers since 2005 and co-instructing Duke field courses in community-based environmental management since 2013. This year, for the first time, the Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative (DCOI) within the Duke Office of Sustainability, purchased offsets from ICICO towards Duke's 2024 carbon neutrality commitment.

This ceremony will recognize the enduring connections between Duke and ICICO. Students recently returned from the 2019 Mexico field course will provide an overview of ICICO's strategies, programs and accomplishments and present their experiences visiting ICICO communities. Tani Colbert-Sangree, Strategic Coordinator for DCOI, will present his experience attending ICICO's recognition ceremony in Mexico in November 2018 and present leaders from around campus with the wealth of gifts he received on behalf of Duke.
