¿Mentoring UP: Developing Effective Interpersonal Communication Skills¿

Good communication is a key element of any relationship, and a mentoring relationship is no exception. It is not enough to say that we know good communication when we see it. Rather, it is critical that we reflect upon and identify characteristics of effective communication and take time to practice communication skills.
At this session you will:
¿ Learn strategies for improving communication (in person, at a distance, across multiple mentors, and within proper personal boundaries). Discuss how different backgrounds can play a role in how communication is perceived and handled.
¿ Practice strategies for communicating with your mentor and members of your research group.
¿ Define your current mentoring and support network and explore how to establish professional relationships.
¿ Discuss how you can engage a mentoring network to advance your research career, articulate the role(s) that each mentor in your network plays, and develop strategies to fill any missing roles.
