Pratt master's students may register for this workshop at wconline.pratt.duke.edu. This workshop is a part of the Pratt Master's Professional Development Program.

Workshop Description: In recent years, rarely a news cycle passes without mention of some form of sexual harassment. We hear about sexual harassment in academia, in entertainment, in our government, and in countless other industries. Preventing sexual harassment is not only a legal obligation, but also a critically important financial decision. Although difficult to calculate due to out of court settlements and under-reporting, the average cost of a sexual harassment lawsuit in the workplace is over $100,000 per complaint (not including costs of employee turnover, absences, and reduced productivity, which could bring that number into the millions of dollars).

Given the U.S.context and climate, what is the role of gender equity in the workplace, and in what ways does an emphasis on gender equity impact the likelihood of sexual harassment? In this workshop, we'll discuss:1) Gender equity in the workplace in the context of equal opportunity in the United States, 2) Identifying inappropriate conduct related to sex in professional environments, 3) How to report, respond to, and/or manage inappropriate sexual conduct once it has been identified, and 4) Understanding one's role and obligation in achieving gender equity.
