Artist-in-Residence Rebecca Wahls “GOOD"

"GOOD"

Adapted from "The Good Person of Szechuan" by Bertolt Brecht

by Theater Studies Artist-in-Residence Rebecca Wahls

Reception immediately following at The Landing, Bryan Center

A Woman is visited by the Gods and told that if she can't prove she's Good in one year, the world will end. No pressure!! As the Woman balances love, business ownership, and civil responsibility, the mandate to be Good proves impossible... on her own. To preserve her Goodness, she creates an alter ego who isn't afraid to get the job done by any means necessary: the Girl Boss.

"GOOD" explores the measures women take to maintain their identity in a world that consistently proves they will never be enough, but also strongly advises them against being too much.

Bertolt Brecht's "The Good Woman of Setzuan" is reimagined for the 21st century in this ensemble-driven play with an original pop score created by Duke Theater Studies Artist-in-Residence Rebecca Wahls.

Rebecca Wahls is a director, writer, and producer of film, theatre, and new media. Her first feature film, "Him," is currently playing festivals across the US and is the winner of the Director's Award for Best Performance (Ensemble) at the Woods Hole Film Festival.

It was a part of the 2022 Season at Fort Salem Theater in Salem, NY and was a part of the 2022-2023 Season at Carnegie Mellon University. It has gone on to become a finalist for 2024's Write Out Loud competition, be selected to appear in the 2023 Musical Theatre Educators' Alliance's New Works Collaboration Catalog, have a 29-hour reading with Tisch New Theatre at NYU, be featured in the Latiné Musical Theatre Lab & Prospect Theater Company's New Musicals Mixtape Concert at Chelsea Factory, and be selected as a Finalist for Parlando School of Musical Arts' 2024 New Musical Project.
