CEE Seminar - Unlocking Infrastructure Durability, Resilience, and Sustainability with Stainless Steel Clad Rebar
In this colloquium talk, Dr. McAlpine will discuss his journey from graduate student researcher to co-founder of Allium, a materials technology startup commercializing stainless clad rebar (SCR).
Allium is taking stainless cladding technology from the world of
nuclear energy and applying it at scale to solve the biggest long-term challenge facing reinforced concrete infrastructure: rebar
corrosion. SCR is a metallic composite material which combines the corrosion resistance of stainless steel with the mechanical and
structural properties of conventional carbon steel reinforcement.
This presentation will discuss how Allium's novel laser-based manufacturing technology allows for SCR to be produced with existing rebar steel mills, along with real-world infrastructure application case studies of SCR including a highway bridge in
California and a coastal marina in Florida. Finally the sustainability and resilience benefits of SCR will be outlined including how SCR can enable the broad adoption of next-generation cementitious
materials and low or zero carbon concrete.
