Shot over three years, Shuffle follows three individuals whose survival depends not on getting into treatment, but on getting out alive. Through their stories-and with the filmmaker drawing on his own lived experience-the film exposes the insurance-driven cycle of fraud and exploitation spreading across the addiction treatment industry. With the help of an FBI informant, an insurance analyst, and a former treatment facility director, Shuffle uncovers how public policy and private interests intersect to prey on vulnerable people for profit.

While still on the festival circuit, the filmmakers are prioritizing community impact screenings to spark urgent conversations about these systemic problems. Duke's Center for Community-Engaged Scholarship and the Wilson Center for Science and Justice at Duke Law are proud to co-sponsor the North Carolina premiere of Shuffle, using the film as a catalyst to shine a light on the inequality and policy failures at the heart of the addiction treatment industry.

Following the screening, filmmaker Benjamin Flaherty will join a distinguished panel of experts, including Satana Deberry, Durham County District Attorney, and Dr. Marvin Swartz, Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke Law's Wilson Center for Science and Justice - for a candid discussion on the legal, policy, and ethical issues raised by the film. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Lawrence Greenblatt, State Health Director and Chief Medical Officer - NC Department of Health and Human Services.
