Bach Cantata Series: Solo Cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach

J.S. Bach's church cantatas are a pinnacle of German sacred music, works whose theological depth and emotional resonance touch deep places in the human soul. The Chapel's Bach Cantata Series presents these musical masterpieces accompanied by other notable choral and instrumental works of the Baroque era. For the final concert in this year's program, we are delighted to welcome back soprano Molly Quinn and baritone Charlie Moore to perform some of Bach's loveliest cantatas for solo voices and orchestra.

Admission is free.

The program includes Bach's secular Italian cantata "Non sa che sia dolore" (He does not know what sorrow is), BWV 209; and two sacred cantatas: "Der Friede sei mit dir" (Peace be with you), BWV 158; and "Ich bin vergnügt" (I am content), BWV 84. Mallarmé Music will also play instrumental music by G.P. Telemann.

Paid parking is available on a first-come-first-served basis in the Bryan Center Garage at 125 Science Drive. ADA parking is available in surface lot at the same address.

In advance of the concert, Interim Chapel Organist Chad Fothergill gives a talk on "J.S. Bach and Parables of Fortune and Farewell" at 4:00 p.m. in the Divinity School's Goodson Chapel. In it, he explores ways in which Bach's approach to writing for more intimate ensembles is just as inspired and profound as his composition of masses and oratorios.

Families with young children are invited to drop in during a rehearsal the day before the concert (May 6) between 1:00 and 3:30 p.m. for a chance to hear the music close-up in an informal setting.
