The Latin word vesper means "evening," and Vespers services-held in the hours around sunset-are as old as Christianity itself. Duke Chapel's Jazz Vespers combines the liturgical traditions of Vespers with the musical improvisation of jazz. Jazz Vespers services are led by Chapel and community ministers, with music provided by the John Brown Little Big Band, a professional jazz ensemble specializing in works from the Great American Songbook as well as contemporary arrangements.
