A Conversation on Misinformation in Asian Diasporic Communities:

How does mis- and disinformation spread across diasporic social platforms? How do transnational histories of migration shape information networks and political discourses in Asian and Asian American communities? What do transnational media ecosystems reveal about intra-community dynamics across different Asian diasporas?

As part of our brown bag conversation series, join us for an informal talk and interactive discussion with Visiting Scholar Rachel Kuo about mis- and disinformation in our family and community networks. In this past year, you may have experienced polarizing conversations about politics with family members or been part of a group chat where members have shared false or questionable information. During this conversation, we will discuss the histories and geopolitical contexts of information. We will also explore transnational media systems, including connections between ethnic media platforms and Asian language news; mobile messaging apps like WeChat, WhatsApp, Kakao, and Line; and big tech platforms like Facebook and Youtube.

This conversation precedes a research workshop on histories of information on October 27. For interested students, there will be future opportunities to participate as paid researchers in a project on transnational, multilingual, and intergenerational information networks.

Dr. Rachel Kuo writes, teaches, and researches race, social movements, and digital technology. She is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Visiting Scholar at Duke University's Asian American and Diasporic Studies program. She is a founding member and current affiliate of the Center for Critical Race and Digital Studies and also a co-founder of the Asian American Feminist Collective. https://www.rachelkuo.com/
