AAHVS Visiting Artist Speaker Series

Dan Hale tells stories through the mediums of animation, film, and photography, and is an Assistant Professor of Animation at UNC Greensboro. In 2019, he received an MFA in Digital Production Arts from Clemson University where he was honored with the Ollie Johnson Excellence in Animation Award and was accepted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the International Honor Society for Computing and Information Disciplines. Dan also earned an AAS in Photographic Technology: Photojournalism from Randolph Community College (2005), and a BA in Media Studies: Moving Image and Sound Production from UNC Greensboro (2001). He returned to UNCG in 2020 to begin building the BFA concentration in Animation in the School of Art that launched in the fall of 2022.

Dan was the recipient of UNCG's 2025 James Y. Joyner Alumni Teaching Excellence Award and was also named the 2025 College of Visual and Performing Arts Outstanding Teacher. He teaches courses in 3D modeling and animation, storyboarding, and also guides the Animation Capstone.

Inspired by research into nineteenth-century optical toys, Dan's art practice explores ways to bring digital 3D animation back into physical 3D space to re-establish the visceral connection between the viewer and the images. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and festivals around the world, including the prestigious Slamdance Film Festival in 2025.

The talk will take place in Room A101 Bay 12 on the first floor of Smith Warehouse. Free and open to the public.
