Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences Grand Rounds

Sponsored by Ewald W. Busse Lectureship. Lawrence Carin earned the BS, MS, and PhD degrees in electrical engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. In 1989, he joined the Electrical Engineering Dept at Polytechnic Univ.(Brooklyn) as Assistant Professor, and became Associate Professor in 1994. In September 1995, he joined the Electrical & Computer Engineering Dept at Duke University, where he is now a Professor. He was ECE Dept Chair 2011-2014, Vice Provost for Research 2014-2019, and since 2019 he has served as Duke's Vice President for Research. From 2003-2014 he held the William H. Younger Distinguished Professorship, and since 2018 he has held the James L. Meriam Distinguished Professorship. Over the last 10 years, his research has focused on statistical methods for machine learning, with a significant focus on applications in health and disease. For example, an important focus has been placed on genomics, particularly for infectious disease. During the course of that research he has developed strong working relationships with many infectious disease clinicians and researchers. More recently he has developed a research focus on neuroscience, for which we have developed state-of-the-art methods for analysis of neural-recording data. He has been the advisor of over 25 PhD students and 20 post docs, many of whom now have successful research careers of their own. He understands the importance of communication and and teamwork.
