Data + Summer Workshop Series

Summer workshop Mondays/Thursdays 11-1pm in Gross Hall 330.lunch with talk/workshop by members of the Duke communityMachine Learning: what it is, how it¿s used, and how Matlab can help. We¿ll walk through the major categories of machine learning techniques, debunk some common terminology gaps, and discuss strategies for applying machine learning algorithms to datasets. In particular, we¿ll focus on data classification and highlight examples in Matlab.Gerrymandering Data+ group (mentors Jonathan Mattingly and Christy Vaughn, and team members Sophie Guo, Bridget Dou, and Sachet Bangia)abstract:"Our group is studying gerrymandering, or drawing district boundaries to favor a political party. We will briefly describe a diagnostic tool that can be used to help quantify if districts have been gerrymandered. (Hopefully) we will show an animation of how our model evolves district boundaries, describe some of the drawbacks of our model, given the available data, and discuss future directions, which include adding an energy term to favor the creation of majority minority districts, trying different proposals, and studying different states."
