Systems of human social categorization vary markedly across contexts, cultures, and time. How do children make sense of this variation to develop beliefs that particular, culturally relevant criteria mark fundamental, stable, and informative differences between people? This talk will present research that examines the early development of children's conceptual representations of the social world.
