Professor Maartje van Gelder of the History Department at the University of Amsterdam will present a lecture, "Rioting in Venice: The Arsenal Workers' Protest of 1569," which is part of a larger project to underscore that even Renaissance Venice, known for its stability and internal tranquility, was subject to pressures from its artisans and working people. The lecture is sponsored by the departments of cultural anthropology, history, political science and the program in Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
