Challenges of Urban Revitalization

Challenges of Urban Revitalization
Thursday, October 12, 2017
5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Joe Riley, Mayor Bill Bell, and Frederick Mayer

Join Duke's Policy Bridge for a discussion on the challenges of revitalizing cities with former mayor of Charleston Joe Riley and Durham Mayor Bill Bell on Thursday, Oct. 12 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Rhodes Conference Room at the Sanford School of Public Policy on Duke's West Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Durham and Charleston have many things in common. Both are continuously growing hubs for entertainment and development. In 2016, both cities topped Business Insiders "24 Best Places to Live in the South." This accolade was accomplished by much of the work Riley and Bell set out to do in their multiyear leadership of both cities.

But this progress is not without its challenges. Both have contentious legacies of classism and racism and are still contending with these issues in their urban renaissance.

On October 12th, Joe Riley, one of America's longest-serving mayors, will give a talk about lessons learned from the forty years he presided over a changing city. Together with mayor Bill Bell, Riley will explore what these challenges mean for their cities in a conversation moderated by public policy professor Fritz Mayer. This event is also part of a yearlong celebration of the Terry Sanford Centennial. Details: www.sanford.duke.edu.
