Introduction to National Security Wargaming

The lecture will introduce students to professional wargaming in the national security field. From ancient to modern wargames, the lecture will briefly discuss the history and evolution of wargaming as a discipline. The focus of the lecture will examine the purposes, the taxonomy, and strengths and weaknesses of both analytical and educational wargames in the national security field.

Sebastian J. Bae is an adjunct assistant professor at the Center for Security Studies at Georgetown University. He teaches a graduate course, Basics of Wargaming, where student teams research and design educational wargames on military case studies. He also serves as the Faculty Advisor to the Georgetown University Wargaming Society (GUWS), the Co-Chair of the Military Operations Research Society (MORS) Wargaming Community of Practice (CoP), and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Brute Krulak Center for Innovation and Creativity. His professional research focuses on wargaming, emerging technologies, future warfighting concepts, and strategy and doctrine for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. Previously, he served six years in the Marine Corps infantry, leaving as a Sergeant. He deployed to Iraq in 2009.
