Strength in Unity - Duke LGBTQ+ Virtual Pride Parade

Event Image
Thursday, June 24, 2021
9:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Join us for a virtual Pride Parade to celebrate the diversity, spirit and strength of Duke's LGBTQ+ community. From solidarity to intersectionality, this event will be a forum for reverie, protest, self-expression, remembrance, support and more.

During the event, we will honor Dr. Janie Long M.R.E.'81 for her contributions to the LGBTQ+ community. Janie served as the Director of the Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity (CSGD) from 2006 to 2014 and then as Associate Dean & Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. She quickly earned a reputation as a caring and supportive mentor who unifies people to make things happen, while ensuring that everyone's voice is heard. Her impact on students, alumni and colleagues endures long after goals have been attained and crises have been addressed. For all her talents and skills, it is her ability to connect with and make herself available to so many that allowed her to build the foundation for our community. Please join us as we honor and salute her contributions to our vibrant Network!

And yes, THERE WILL ALSO BE DRAG! Not lip-syncing, not covers, but original Club Kid Drag Pop Music that was written by the artiste. That's right, artiste! Rence Nemeh '15 is a Chicago-based nightlife comedian. He has written and performed original sketch comedy with The Second City house company - a world famous theater known for legendary alums like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Stephen Colbert - and performs in their children's theatrical Totally Bonkers Improv Showdown in the summers. He has performed all over the Chicago nightlife scene, the New York International Fringe Festival, and even random furniture store openings! He is so grateful for the chance to celebrate Pride together from home, and hopes we are so loud and proud that all of our neighbors hate us!

With appearances from regional groups, allies, activists and oh my!

Be Proud, Be Forever Duke!
