Student Pop-Up Exhibition: Intro to Black-and-White Photography

Student exhibit-in-progress
Wednesday, April 24, 2019
10:00 am - 11:00 am

Exhibits-in-progress by undergrads in CDS instructor MJ Sharp's photography classes will culminate in pop-up shows at CDS on April 24: 10-11 a.m. Introduction to Black and White Photography, Porch Gallery; 2-3 p.m. Photography Workshop, University Gallery.

Says Sharp of the Intro to Black-and-White Photography class:
"I used to ask students why they signed up for Introduction to Black and White Photography when instant results were available so readily on any number of excellent digital cameras as well as the phone in their pocket. What's become clear over the past several years is that students are craving craft. They want a process that is a bit out of their hands, where the Fates offer up thrilling surprises along with the inevitable heartbreaks. Over the course of the semester students arriving excitedly at the darkroom change their declaration from 'I got some great shots!!!' to 'I think I got some great shots-I'm going to process the film now. Wish me luck.'

Therein lies the thrill of film photography. You're mostly in the driver's seat, but not completely, and that means that while there's room for things to go wrong, there is also room for very unexpected things to go right."
