My project challenges the assumptions that computation cannot provide any new insights into the intricacies of literature-by tracing the velocity of the shift in intertextual elements to adaptations during the eighteenth century. Essentially, this project decenters realism as the center of modernity and reconfigures adaptation across multiple mediums as a driving force in the development of subjectivity. Along the way, this project reconfigures digital humanities methodology into studies of the novel which challenge traditional distant reading techniques. Recent critics of computational literary studies have emphasized the surface and obvious understanding of literature that is often produced from computation, focusing on the ways in which traditional humanistic methodology and criticism is too complex for computers to understand. I, however, construct a new humanistic methodology by showing how these computational techniques can provide new insights into the spread of stories throughout the world.
