Aging in America [Registration Required]

NPR: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, "older people will outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history by 2035." Forbes: "With growing numbers, older adults represent a dynamic emerging market and human capital resource. As markets evolve to meet their needs and aspirations, opportunities abound."

This workshop will provide students a better understanding of U.S. aging trends and the needs/concerns of aging Americans that they can bring in their future roles as entrepreneurs and roles in technology, medical, and health care-related companies.

Facilitator Bios: Dr. Heather Whitson is the Director of the Duke Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development and a nationally-recognized geriatrics researcher. Dr. Whitson is interested in improving care delivery systems and intervention programs to better serve medically complex patients. Within the Duke Aging Center, she leads research efforts aimed at promoting resilience to late-life stressors (e.g., surgery, sensory loss).

Dr. Deborah T. Gold directs the Postdoctoral Research Training Program at the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development, as well as the Duke Undergraduate Program in Human Development. Her research focuses on the psychosocial consequences of chronic illness in late life.
