SLIPPAGE 2021 Fall Series

Saturday, August 28 at 8pm, the SLIPPAGE 2021 Fall Series presents a captivating music performance, "It's Always A Ways Away." A set of romantic, contemporary and traditional music curated and performed live by Kenneth D. Stewart. Adam Rose will be joining Kenneth on electric guitar and Mik Templeton on tenor saxophone. This show is an expression of gratitude for Prof. Thomas DeFrantz's friendship and keen mentorship.

This evening concert experience will contain a 50 minute set of contemporary music of Olivier Messiaen's "Louange à l'Éternité de Jésus" from Quatuor Pour le Fin du Temp, selections from Daniel Asia's 'Guitar Set', Nigerian composer, Joshua Uzoigwe's "Ukom" from Talking Drums presented alongside traditional American music and fragments of pieces from romantic composers Leoš Janáček and Francisco Tárrega.

The show places older music into contemporary settings and shrouds the contemporary pieces with familiar elements and voices. The concert is a collection of short pieces, improvisations and sound-art works. Alongside the evening's pieces are lights, projected images, and sounds that swerve across lanes of memory. The show celebrates the past and prepares for the change of the future.

This event, like others for the fall series, will be in the SLIPPAGE lab, Room 202, Rubenstein Arts Center. All events are free and open to the public. There will be capacity limits and masking protocols. For more information email: t.defrantz@duke.edu.
