Duke Chorale with the Choral Society of Durham and the Durham Medical Orchestra present Philip Glass's "Itaipú" and Eric Whitacre's "Deep Field"

Parana River dam and Hubble telescope
Sunday, March 03, 2019
3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Rodney Wynkoop, director of the Duke Chorale and the Choral Society of Durham, will conduct this concert. The Choral Society of Durham's winter performance features a collaboration with the Durham Medical Orchestra (Verena Mösenbichler-Bryant, director). Philip Glass' "Itaipú" sets the text of the creation myth of the Guaraní, the major indigenous people group of Paraguay and the Paraná region of Brazil. It originated as one of Glass' responses to nature in general and to the massive hydro-electric dam, a technological wonder that was being built at Itaipú on the Paraná River at the time. "Deep Field" was composed by Eric Whitacre in 2015. Inspired by images from the iconic Hubble Telescope Deep Field, the work features a smart-phone app that can be viewed by the audience as part of the performance.
