Gameful Pedagogy in Chinese Language Course Design

As a new approach to course design, Gameful pedagogy "takes inspiration from how good games function, and applies that to the design of learning environments. Gameful design operates in a self-deterministic framework-we want to apply what self-determination theory says about how intrinsic motivation works to build motivating classroom experiences." In this talk, Prof. Qian Liu will discuss how to implement this gameful pedagogy in foreign language courses with her "Business Chinese" and "Media Chinese" courses as examples. She will also share her students' feedback and her own reflection on Gameful Pedagogy.
Qian Liu is currently a Lecturer of Chinese in the Department of Asian languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan. She received her master's degree in Communication from Hong Kong Baptist University and a Graduate certificate in Translation from Hong Kong University. She has been teaching Chinese for fourteen years and currently teaches Chinese courses at all levels for second language learners and heritage students. In 2018, she teamed with three Roman language teachers and began implementing the "Gameful Pedagogy" into foreign language courses at the University of Michigan.
