Since 2003, after incidents such as the 2001 World Trade Center attacks spurred new counter-terrorism efforts in the U.S., the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has paid close attention to firms' financial ties to state sponsor of terrorism countries. As the number of SEC inquiries into potential terrorist ties grows, new research from Professor Bill Mayew suggests that the increase could reduce the quality of the agency's financial reporting oversight.
