Paul Wapner
Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and the University Program in Environmental Policy seminar series

Paul Wapner, professor of global environmental politics in the School of International Service at American University, will present "Is Wildness Over?" on Wednesday, April 18, in Environment Hall on Duke University's west campus.

Humanity has tamed the world. It has decoded the laws of nature and reshaped the land, water, and soil to fit its wishes. In its zeal to control, however, humanity has displaced wildness from our immediate lives to the Earth as a whole. Instead of facing daily threats to welfare, we now must confront global wildness. Climate change, loss of biodiversity, and other environmental dangers escape easy governance and threaten the biophysical foundations of planetary wellbeing. This talk will trace the emergence of global wildness and explain how rewilding-inviting more unpredictability into our lives-can provide a meaningful response to a world careening out of control.

This talk is part of the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and the University Program in Environmental Policy seminar series featuring leading experts discussing a variety of pressing environmentally focused topics.
