VFF: Mapping Shoreline Change with Small Drones: Filling Data Gaps in the Coastal Zone [GIS Day]
NOTE: This talk will take place in Grainger (Environment) Hall!
Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) technology is ripe for deployment over beach and dune systems, and can offer distinct advantages over traditional methods like LIDAR, TLS, and GNSS point surveys. This presentation provides an overview of UAS data collection over barrier island systems in North Carolina, and subsequent analysis yielding shoreline migration measurements, volumetric calculations, and erosion/accretion maps. Special attention is paid to UAS sorties conducted before and after hurricanes Matthew and Florence.
