Dr. Basu's discussion will include:

-The value of comparative effectiveness through real-world evidence.
-The importance of identifying natural experiments occurring in the real-world to estimate causal effects.
-The effect of heterogeneity and its importance on decision-making.

He will highlight new methods to achieve these objectives using continuous instrumental variables and illustrate the application of the these methods in assessing the impact of ICU transfers on patient mortality.

About Dr. Basu, Professor of Health Economics
Departments of Pharmacy, Health Services, and Economics University of Washington, Seattle

Dr. Basu is a health economist and a statistician who specializes in research on comparative and cost effectiveness analyses, causal inference methods, program evaluation, and outcomes research. He is a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, and was one of the panelists for the Second Panel on the Cost-Effectiveness Analysis in Health and Medicine.
