MEMS Seminar: "Engineering Change: Strategic Action to Achieve Diversity in Engineering"

Women and students of color are persistently and near-universally under-represented throughout the engineering pipeline, including K12 feeder programs, post-secondary (undergraduate) programs, and the engineering workforce. This lack of diversity negatively impacts the field by limiting the size of the talent pool and hindering our collective ability to solve complex problems. This seminar will update the audience on the state of diversity in the engineering pipeline, introduce proven strategies to create more inclusive classrooms and institutions, and empower participants to develop their own strategic plans of action.

Jenni M. Buckley is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at University of Delaware (UD). She has over 10 years of engineering experience in medical device design and biomechanical evaluation and has research interests in human factors design, medical device development, and equity and inclusion issues in engineering education. She teaches a range of courses across the mechanical engineering curriculum, including CAD, mechanics, and capstone design. Dr. Buckley serves as the Director for the Working Group on Undergraduate Diversity at UD College of Engineering. She is also the Co-Founder and President of The Perry Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to diversifying the pipeline in engineering and medicine through hands-on learning.
