An Evening with Serge Attukwei Clottey

An Evening with Serge Attukwei Clottey
Tuesday, April 23, 2019
5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Serge Attukwei Clottey, Fati Abubakar, Siddhartha Mitter

Come downtown for a celebration of creative self-expression through multimedia arts. The evening's events at NorthStar Church of the Arts will include a fashion procession, a live performance by Ghanaian artist Serge Attukwei Clottey, a discussion about African art and expression with Clottey, photojournalist Fati Abubakar, and journalist Siddhartha Mitter, and the unveiling of Abubakar's newest photography exhibit, "Textiling." The exhibit portraits capture how Duke students use fashion and family textiles to honor and safeguard their African heritages and will be on view at NorthStar Church of the Arts for one evening only (April 23).

Serge Attukwei Clottey will perform a piece inspired by his notable work, My Mother's Wardrobe, which uses performance to explore traditional gender roles along with notions of family, ancestry, and spirituality. My Mother's Wardrobe was conceived in the aftermath of the death of his own mother and honors women as the collectors and custodians of cloth that serves as signifiers of history and memory.

Join the fashion procession on West Geer Street at 5 pm! More info: https://fsp.trinity.duke.edu/projects/clottey
