Whether carving out a progressive folk niche in the rootsy trio Mount Moriah or moonlighting in indie rock darling Angel Olsen's touring band, H.C. McEntire stands out as one of Americana's most gifted and unique artists. A product of rural Southern Baptist roots and feminist punk ideals, the North Carolina native makes this seeming paradox for her 2018 critically-acclaimed solo debut Lionheart, an openly queer country music paean. "As McEntire returns to tradition, she pushes ever further towards shaping a new one," declared Pitchfork of her album's uncompromising yet conciliatory approach to the genre dearest to her. At Sarah P. Duke Gardens, she draws upon this often intimate set of tunes made more personal by performing them so close to home.

Duke Performances' 2019 Music in the Gardens is made possible, in part, with support from Duke Continuing Studies, Duke Summer Session & The Sarah P. Duke Gardens.
